🎉 ¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! 🎉

September 15 – October 15 marks Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

The CSUN Journalism Alumni Association, we're proud to spotlight the Latino journalists, storytellers, and media professionals who have shaped our newsrooms and our communities. From breaking barriers in the industry to telling stories that matter, our Hispanic and Latino alumni continue to inspire the next generation of Matadors.

This month, we celebrate their voices, honor their journeys, and recommit to supporting diverse storytelling in journalism.

Thank you to everyone who showed up tonight for Journalism Unplugged. It was really great to see some familiar and new faces.

Congratulations to our opportunity prize winners on getting CPK, Coffee Bean, and Starbucks gift cards. Along with a set of books provided by CSUN Alumni.

We look forward to seeing you all at our next event! Don’t forget to stay connected and let us know what you’re doing in the field, on the side, or if there are any achievements you would love to share.

🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Richie Quintero (Class of 2022) 🎙️

Even with much of his CSUN experience happening virtually during the pandemic, Richie made it a priority to get the full college experience, building meaningful connections with peers and professors that became a huge part of his journey. 💫

Those relationships paid off, helping him land job interviews and advance his career. Richie also took lessons from every course — storytelling, writing, interviewing, producing — and applies them today in his role as a producer at KFI AM 640/iHeartRadio.

His proudest moment? Being part of TWO award-winning projects at the RTNA Southern California 75th Golden Mike Awards®: 🏆
🥇 "S*x, Drugs, and Social Media" — Best Radio Long Form Program or Documentary
🥇 "Studio 640" — Best Radio News Talk Show or Public Affairs Program

He's also covered meaningful events like Outloud Music Festival during WeHo Pride and entertainment coverage at Coachella! 🎤

His advice for upcoming grads? 💬
"Give everything your best, absorb as much as you can, and never be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Make connections, build relationships with your professors and peers, step outside of your comfort zone, and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Most importantly, never give up on your dreams."

🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Stephanie Rivera ('17) 📈

CSUN taught Stephanie something every grad needs to hear: your path doesn't have to be perfectly figured out — you have to keep moving forward. 💫

During her time at CSUN, Stephanie learned to balance school, work, and internships while gaining the independence and confidence that would shape her career. She started as an intern while still in college and has since built an incredible career in media and marketing—working with major brands, developing creative campaigns, and building strong client relationships. She also earned her master's degree along the way! 🙌

Her proudest moment? Looking back and seeing just how far she's come. 🌟

Her advice for upcoming grads? 💬
"Don't put too much pressure on yourself to have everything figured out right after graduation. Your career may take you in a completely different direction than you originally planned, and that's okay. Be open to opportunities, make connections, ask questions, and don't be afraid to start somewhere and work your way up.

🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Gessele Malubag ('24) 🎬

From CSUN Journalism (PR emphasis) + Marketing minor to working in Hollywood publicity — Gessele's journey is proof that hard work & humility go a long way! ✨

At CSUN, she served as CSUN PRSSA's Director of Communications and wrote for CSUN Today as a Student Assistant— all while gaining real-world experience through internships at Hallmark Media and NBCUniversal

Since graduating, she's landed not one but TWO jobs in her dream field: starting as a Film Publicity Coordinator at Katrina Wan, and now serving as a Global Publicity Admin. Assistant at Universal Pictures, supporting the SVP of Global Publicity! 🌟

Her advice to upcoming grads? 💬
"Be humble and soak up as much information as you can. It's important to be eager and willing to dive in headfirst, but also recognize the value of sitting back, observing, and listening to how processes are handled."
