The Department of Journalism offers an MA degree in Mass Communication, which trains students in both analysis of the media as well as the production of media content. Both areas, emphasize media’s role in social change. Our graduate faculty come from around the world and have expe

rtise in areas such as immigration and news, citizen journalism, ethnic media, refugee media practices and visual communication. The graduate program in Mass Communication presupposes strong undergraduate preparation or equivalent professional experience in the mass media. The Master's program calls for more intensive study, allows for development of individual professional skills and interests, focuses on evaluation of media performance and uses analytic and research techniques culminating in a thesis, graduate project or comprehensive written examination.

Trine Bay Larsen has always had a passion for human rights. When she was in the Mass Communication program Trine was inspired by the work of program coordinator and professor Melissa Wall and developed an interest in the plight of refugees.

Her thesis documented the lives of refugees in her native country of Denmark, where she now works as a project coordinator for an EU-backed campaign to fight loneliness.

During her time at CSUN, Mass Communication alumna Sarah Shabbar actively participated in the workshop One of Us, which provides camera and training for the homeless community to document their own lives.

Shabbar learned how to film and photograph, but most importantly she listened to the participants' stories.

Through the workshop and the mentorship of its creator, professor David Blumenkrantz, Shabbar developed her thesis project, an online portal with the goal of "Destigmatizing the image of homeless women in Los Angeles, California."

Shabbar conducted several interviews and allowed the women to tell their own stories, free from reporting biases or prejudices found in news coverage of the issue.

She formed a deep bond with the women she interviewed and credits the master's program with her becoming a better storyteller and activist.
