Hola! My name is Madison Weaver, and I’m a rising junior at SMC studying biology. This summer I studied abroad in Ecuador for a 2 week course focused on the environments of Ecuador. Engulfed in Ecuador’s beautiful cultural history, we toured the capital of Quito (highest capital city in the world), visited the Yanayacu biological station, hiked in the Andes mountains, and went off the grid at the Tiputini biodiversity station. There, we encountered species like the rare spectacle bear, sloths, pink dolphins, and scarlet macaws. Our time at Tiputini included a 7 hour hike through the Amazon rainforest and swimming in the Yasuní river (no piranha encounters). This is the experience of a lifetime! Yia sas! My name is Sara Peabody and I am a rising senior participating in the ten-day Greece program through Saint Mary’s. The content we learn centers around Greco-Roman and early Christian traditions, but all of the learning we do is experiential - we walk among the ruins, through the churches and around the cities and towns! This experience offered through Saint Mary’s has been so fruitful for my global understanding and I have so much gratitude for this opportunity. If you decide to go abroad (you should), try anything and everything to engage with the community you are visiting! Hello! My name is Harper Valerius, and I am a sophomore at SMC studying Economics! This summer, I am studying abroad in London. This is a three week business practicum, which means I take a British Life and Culture course and I work on a marketing project for a high end company. I have had some of the greatest experiences and have met some of the most wonderful people. I am so grateful to SMC for offering this program. The professors who run the program are all wonderful. The best part is that our classes consists of tours of the coolest tourist attractions (my favorite being the crown jewels). Johanna Gonzalez experienced the election of Pope Leo XIV while studying in Rome, Italy this spring semester. "I had just gotten back from dinner and changed into my pajamas when I opened TikTok. The first video was a livestream of news station showing the white smoke. I was confused and shocked; questioning if it was THE white smoke. Suddenly bells were ringing everywhere even near trastevere. My roommate Carolina and I changed very quickly and began running to the Vatican which is about 20 minutes away. Everyone everywhere began running to the Vatican! Once we got there we tried watching from the side but it was way too crowded and the screens were too far. We attempted to run around and get in St. Peter’s square but ultimately decided to stay a little farther back next to a giant screen broadcasting the event. After the reveal, we were a little nervous as we didn’t know much about the new Pope, however after further research we feel more comfortable and confident that the new pope will do great things! After the reveal and tired from the long run, we trudged home with a water bottle a kind stranger bought us :)"

Alumna Alert! Cate Cetta Scola, SMC Class of 2008 studied abroad in Rome during the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 semesters. She now works for NBC News based in New York running global camera and audio crew deployments for the network news division and was in Rome covering the papal conclave. She provided current students studying in Rome, Italy🇮🇹 with a tour of the behind the scenes of NBC's setup at this history making event!

Hi belles! My name is Madison Minton, and I am a sophomore at SMC studying sociology with a concentration in criminology. This semester, I am studying abroad in Rome, Italy. During my time here so far I have visited 10 countries and different parts of Italy. My last trip abroad will be Munich Germany for spring fest! Studying abroad may have been the best choice I have made. It has given me so many opportunities and expanded me as a student and person. If there is one thing I can recommend for smc students it would be to spend time abroad. It will change your life. Feel free to message me with any questions :) .minton
