"The Ordo Amoris Revisited: Theological, Ethical, and Political Perspectives" (May 8, 2026)

This workshop gathers scholars from various traditions to examine classical and contemporary accounts of ordo amoris and its significance for today’s ethical and political challenges.

Obviously, the concept of ordo amoris—the “order of love”—has deep roots in Western thought, from Augustine and Aquinas to Scheler and Spaemann. It concerns how love should be hierarchically ordered, granting higher priority to special relationships and objects. Yet it also raises a number of important questions...

The Forum is hosting its annual Spring Colloquium on April 3-4, 2025, which can be attended online or in person at the University of Notre Dame. This year's theme is "Minds in Dialogue in the History of Philosophy," the third and final installation for the project "Modeling the Mind in the European History of Philosophy," cosponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, University of Notre Dame.

The concept of “the mind”—modeled as a private inner realm, the locus of thought, choice, and selfhood—is often elevated as a key contribution of European philosophy and associated with modern political conceptions of the individual or self. In studying “Modeling the Mind in the History of Philosophy,” our aim is to showcase alternative models that hold considerable value for philosophical reflection today, but that have been buried under layers of historical sediment in the meantime. As historians of philosophy specializing in different time periods and traditions, we are especially interested in tracking how certain models recur, overlap, and interact across different historical periods and traditions.
