“I’d like to continue learning by sitting in rooms with people smarter than I am.”

That mindset led Sophia Combs (BBA '27) to an extraordinary opportunity during her semester abroad in London: an internship at the U.S. Embassy, where a part-time role with the U.S. Commercial Service immersed her in the conversations and decisions shaping global business and policy.

Working in a fast-paced diplomatic environment challenged her to apply what she had learned in the classroom to real-world issues. She credits her experience at Notre Dame and the Business Honors Program with helping her develop the work ethic and confidence needed to thrive in rooms where complex decisions are being made.

For Master of Science in Accountancy students and Deloitte Firm Fellows Josiah Miller and Mia Mazza, the Firm Fellows program provided valuable opportunities to gain perspective from professionals across the firm while building confidence in their career paths.

For Mia, conversations with Deloitte professionals reinforced her decision to transition from economics and private equity into trust and estate planning. For Josiah, the fellowship helped him build meaningful connections within Deloitte before beginning his full-time role, making the firm feel more personal and approachable as he prepares to join the Chicago office this fall.

Their experiences demonstrate that there is no single path into accounting—and that mentorship, relationships, and professional insight can help students confidently navigate what's next.

Some of the best decisions begin with a change in plans.

When Elaine entered Notre Dame's Master of Science in Accountancy program on a different timeline than many of her peers, she discovered opportunities she hadn't expected. The experience gave her the flexibility to explore different career paths and navigate the recruiting process with intention.

“Since I wasn’t locked into a strict timeline, I had more room to adjust if I changed my mind,” she said. “It gave me a lot more control over my path.”

For Emma, the KPMG Firm Fellowship provided reassurance and confidence throughout the recruiting process. For Hammed, the experience fostered meaningful relationships with KPMG professionals that helped him become familiar with the firm’s culture, expectations, and workplace environment.
