Our third field trip of the Cross & Anchor Leadership Summit was to Cultivate Food Rescue, a local nonprofit working to reduce hunger and food waste in northern Indiana by recovering excess, quality food and redistributing it to school children, food pantries, shelters, and more.

In 90 minutes, we worked as a team to prepare 1,626 meals for our local community!

We learned about how .foodrescue volunteers pack meals, drive trucks, cook food, wash dishes, and promote our work across the community.

Thank you Cultivate for having us; we’ll be back soon!

Our early afternoon session featured an Admission’s presentation and a mentor leadership testimonial.

Chris Schaub, a Holy Cross sophomore serving as one of our eight CALS mentors, talked about how his experience playing football and performing in a musical strengthened his confidence, ability to handle constructive criticism, and overall helped him practice finding joy in the little things.

The second field trip of the Cross & Anchor Leadership Summit this week was led by Professor Katherine Barrett, Professor of Biology at Holy Cross College.

16 high school students and 8 Holy Cross College mentors traveled to two sites of the St. Joseph River and learned about water ecology, how to analyze the water sites, and how caring for the community resources is one way that Holy Cross students practice the Citizen role of the Holy Cross Core Four (Scholar, Citizen, Leader, Disciple).

Dr. Katherine Barrett is originally from Rochester NY where she spent several formative years exploring the local waterways. She discovered her passion for understanding determinants of and trends in water quality and relationships between humans and their environment. She is working on diverse research topics related to aquatic ecology, public health, and impacts of place-based learning on student outcomes.

Dr. Barrett’s passion is helping students connect with nature while teaching fundamental ecological concepts.
