ACMS Student Organization, University of Notre Dame

ACMS Student Organization, University of Notre Dame The Student Organization for the Department of Applied & Computational Mathematics & Statistics at Notre Dame, an official SIAM Student Chapter.

As the ACMS Student Organization, an officially recognized SIAM Student Chapter, we program various events throughout the academic year to service the research and career aspirations of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's students. Free SIAM memberships are available to all student members. Members need not be pursuing an ACMS degree. The Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics

(ACMS) is focused on tackling complex problems by combining the tools of its field with realistic knowledge of the problem. ACMS work is inherently interdisciplinary and outward looking. It enables statisticians and mathematicians to work alongside researchers in biological science, chemistry, economics and econometrics, engineering, political science, psychology, and sociology, among many other disciplines. ACMS provides the expertise in mathematical and computational modeling and statistical analysis necessary to the University’s contribution to some of today’s most prominent research areas.

Aloha!

Time for your (sort-of) weekly update on what is going on in our department. For now, there are three things going on this week:

1. ACMS Statistics Seminar
Our very own Hyungsuk Tak will be giving a talk today (Tuesday) at 3:30 PM today in room 154 in Hurley Hall (the building with the globe in it). There is a flyer for the event with the abstract for your convenience.

2. ACMS GSO Meeting (probably) Friday at Noon
Friday at noon (12 PM), we will have our first GSO meeting to discuss all the things. We will also be heading somewhere on campus for food afterwords, if you are interested.

3. Board Game Night (tentatively) Thursday September 13th
For now, there will be a board game night that Thursday evening. More details will be given at the meeting Friday.

As always, have a blessed week!
Steven

Hi Again! As a reminder, for those of you that are interested, there is an applied math seminar today at 3:30 PM in 154 Hurley Hall! Yes there will be food!!!

Title:
"Pattern Formation and Oscillatory Dynamics in a Coupled Bulk-Surface Reaction-Diffusion System"

Abstract:
In this talk, a class of coupled bulk-surface reaction-diffusion models is considered. Passive diffusion occurs in the interior bulk domain and on its boundary, whereas nonlinear reaction kinetics are restricted to the later one. For the circular bulk case, we present how to systematically derive normal forms near the onset of oscillatory and symmetry-breaking instabilities. The theory is illustrated using classical Schnakenberg and Brusselator reaction kinetics, and good agreement between numerical and analytical solutions is obtained in the weakly nonlinear regime. Since our analysis is motivated by applications in cell biology, the extension of it to the study of spatio-temporal protein oscillations will be broached.

This is a joint work with Michael Ward and Wayne Nagata, UBC.

Hi guys! I hope you all are having a great start of the semester! We should be having our first meeting soon (probably next Friday). After the meeting, we shall venture out to a place on campus and have lunch together (though everyone is responsible for their own food).

Have a bleesed week everyone!
Steven
