Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities - LEO - at Notre Dame Poverty research center at the University of Notre Dame. And every day, a lucky few break free of its grasp. An end to injustice. An end to dependence.

Every day, poverty stifles hope, opportunity and dignity for millions of Americans unable to escape its cycle. Thanks to a fierce army of social entrepreneurs, counselors, case managers and so many others, we are beginning to turn the tide. But despite their successes, we still know too little about what works to lift lives up. Notre Dame’s Lab for Economic Opportunities exists to power service wi

th science. We help service providers apply scientific evaluation methods to better understand and unleash effective poverty interventions. We are grounded in a belief that research serves people—not the other way around. So we work side-by-side with our partners across the country to design and implement a research approach that’s both rigorous and respectful of every person it involves. Then we share what we learn with others, allowing each success to inspire thousands more. Because, whether the goal is to help stressed families find stability, connect young people to careers, or move parents to financial independence, outsmarting poverty starts with working smarter. At LEO, we believe rigorous research is a powerful means to an end. An end to poverty. And a new beginning for millions of families who are ready to thrive. The Poverty Research Fellows (PRFs) recently visited Green Bridge Growers, a local social enterprise that combines sustainable agriculture with workforce development opportunities for people with autism in the South Bend community.

PRFs began the day with a tour of the farm, where they learned about Green Bridge Growers’ innovative sustainability practices, including aquaponics systems that use fish waste to nourish plants and support environmentally sustainable food production. They also learned more about the barriers many individuals with disabilities face in accessing stable employment and how organizations like Green Bridge Growers help create pathways to greater economic opportunity, independence, and community inclusion.

Following the tour, the PRFs volunteered on the farm and spread compost across newly planted fields. Through hands-on service, the group contributed to the farm’s ongoing work while gaining a deeper understanding of how local organizations can address poverty through environmental sustainability, dignified employment opportunities, and long-term community investment.

"It's cool coming full circle, because I kind of saw these impacts in the very short term and had mentored some students through the program."

Amphibious Achievement is an academic and athletic mentorship program for Boston Public Schools high school students. Professor Jonathan Tebes started working with the program when he was an undergraduate student at MIT. Now, he serves as the lead researcher for LEO's impact evaluation with the program.

As the PRF program kicks off this week, we are reflecting on the accomplishments of PRF alumni.

Last week, Cade Czarnecki graduated from Notre Dame with bachelors degrees in economics and political science. He served as a research operations analyst with LEO and conducted statistical analyses on multiple projects, including Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor.

Cade also worked closely with LEO co-founder and economics professor Jim Sullivan as his thesis advisor.

Today marks the start of The Poverty Initiative's 2026 Poverty Research Fellows (PRF) program!

This summer, 22 out of 35 PRFs will be working with LEO in roles ranging from research operations to policy and impact. Over the course of 10 weeks, PRFs gain experience collaborating with researchers and practitioners and contribute to evidence-driven efforts to reduce poverty.

This morning LEO co-founder and Poverty Initiative director Jim Sullivan shared his career path and encouraged PRFs to "get curious" as they embark on the next step in their academic journey.

Stay tuned for PRF updates throughout the summer.

During graduation season, we celebrate all the graduating seniors who have made an impact through their work with LEO.

Eva Romero, graduating with a major in economics and minor in accountancy and data science, served as a research operations intern with LEO.

Eva brought her passion for education to the role: “My parents have always instilled in me that education is your way out of poverty. It’s the only way to break the generational cycle.”

During her time at LEO, Eva worked on several projects that aligned with her passion, including 10,000 Degrees College Success program which helps low-income and first generation students find scholarships, access education resources, and complete their bachelor’s degrees.

Congratulations to Eva and Notre Dame's Class of 2026!
