Whether you’re a student, staff, or faculty member preparing to leave campus for the summer, remember these protocols to save resources, prevent theft, and avoid unpleasant surprises upon your return to campus in the fall:

🔌 Unplug “vampire” electronics like chargers. Shut off and unplug all unnecessary electronics like televisions and monitors.

💡Turn off lights, copiers, and printers.

🛜 If your office space has a thermostat, do not adjust it. The majority of systems are remotely regulated campus-wide by utilities and maintenance personnel.

🔑 Close and lock all windows.

🍎 Defrost freezers and empty and unplug refrigerators. Leave refrigerator doors open. Remove any food that will spoil, and dispose of all waste in the receptacles provided in your workspace.

💎 Take all valuable items with you—don’t leave them behind.

🚲 Bicycles: If you’re leaving campus, take it with you. If you’re staying on campus for the summer, be sure to register your bike with NDPD.

💦 Ensure water fixtures and valves are completely closed with no leaks.
If you are on campus during break and notice a water leak or other facility-related issue, contact the Work Control Center at 574-631-8888.

April’s Sustainability Spotlight is Ben Wood, the Assistant Director for Residential Facilities in the Office of Residential Life. In 2019, Ben joined the university as the Assistant Director for Summer Housing, later transitioning to his current position in the fall of 2023, where he serves as the key liaison to several campus partners in maintaining the buildings and coordinating transitions in the living spaces. Ben, while facilitating student move-in and move-out, saw the opportunity to partner with Building Services and establish a donations collection process, beginning with the Goodwill Bin donation program in the residential halls. Since then, Ben has continued to streamline and develop the process with campus partners and organizations to seek additional donation opportunities, including non-perishable food and leftover school supplies. The chance to donate items is now available during both the December and Spring move-out sessions. Ben reminds us to consider donating items that would otherwise go to waste, with the potential to have a second life with others, as this one small action by each of the almost 7000 students moving out in May can have a large impact on the greater community. Beyond campus, Ben enjoys spending time with his family, cherishing joyful moments with his wife and children, whether in the kitchen trying a new recipe or exploring the natural environment. Meet Jacob Eigenheer, our Sustainability Spotlight for February! Jacob serves as a Sous Chef in South Dining Hall, working side-by-side with cooks to monitor production levels and partnering with Greg at Cultivate Food Rescue to establish a daily food-rescuing schedule. Originally cooking for Notre Dame Football, Jacob holds an immense passion for food that extends beyond campus, where he follows a healthy, keto lifestyle. His initiative with mitigating food waste directly cultivates a resilient culture, where the entire team is actively engaged in minimizing waste. One tip Jacob shares to reduce food waste at home is to plan your meals ahead of time, while recognizing the months of labor from farmers, harvesters, suppliers, and grocers that go into every item on the shelves.

Today is World Wetlands Day!

A wetland is an area where land and water meet—such as marshes, swamps, floodplains, and some lake shorelines—where water is present long enough to support plants and wildlife adapted to wet conditions. Wetlands help filter water, reduce flooding, store carbon, and support biodiversity.

Around the world, wetlands like the Everglades, the Okavango Delta, and coastal mangroves protect ecosystems and communities alike.

Here at Notre Dame, St. Mary’s Lake (pictured) and St. Joseph’s Lake are not classified as wetlands, but they are part of the natural landscape that buffers the northwest edge of campus and provide habitat for wildlife, including waterfowl and other species that rely on lake and shoreline environments!
