To wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week, we're spotlighting our middle level teachers. Ms. Lisa, Mr. K, and Ms. Mitchell understand that middle school is about more than content — it’s about belonging, voice, and learning to engage seriously with the world. Their classrooms are places where questions are welcomed, differences are valued, and students are trusted to do meaningful work.

We're continuing our celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week by highlighting 4th Grade Teacher Mr. Tucker and 5th Grade Teacher Ms. Nitzsche, who believe that children are the authors of their own learning. Whether it’s student-led problem solving, choosing the next book, or reflecting on what they’ve made and discovered, their students are active participants — not just recipients.

2nd - 3rd Grade Teachers Ms. Coria and Ms. Kendra follow the lead of their students — into project work, into the woods, and into whatever questions are worth asking that day. They create spaces where autonomy and deep engagement aren’t extras, they’re the whole point.

K-1st Grade Teachers Ms. Nadine and Ms. Marquez believe that a thoughtfully designed environment — one with room to explore, take risks, and get messy — is where real learning begins. Their classrooms are built around community, curiosity, and the conviction that every child has something important to say.

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we're highlighting the incredible teachers and staff who make TCS what it is — and we're starting with our Student Support Services team. At TCS, support is part of the fabric of the school. Ms. Grazyna, Ms. Donna, Ms. Joey, and Ms. Anna work alongside students and families — building reading confidence, supporting social and emotional growth, and offering a trusted presence — with warmth and deep respect for every child's path.

A Moment to Appreciate Our Teachers & Staff

Next week is Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment - together with as a community - to pause and really see the people who make The Children’s School what it is.

At TCS, our teachers and staff do so much more than teach. They listen closely. They design learning that invites curiosity and risk-taking. They hold space for students to encounter differences, work through conflict, and grow into themselves. They notice the small shifts - when a student finds their voice, takes a brave step, or begins to see themselves as a learner in a new way.

They show up for our students with care, consistency, and deep intention.

In classrooms, in Crew, out at Woods Day, on the water during kayaking, in the middle of projects that don’t have easy answers - our educators are right there alongside students. Guiding. Nudging. Encouraging. Reflecting. Beginning again the next day.

This work is complex. It asks a lot. And it is done with so much heart.

I see it every day. I know you do too.

Next week, we’ll have some small ways to show appreciation as a school. If you feel moved, a note, an email, or a moment of gratitude shared directly can go a long way. Our teachers and staff don’t do this work for recognition - but it matters deeply when it comes.

With deep appreciation for this incredible team:
Ms. Nadine: for the steady care and attention you bring to our youngest learners as they begin their journey at TCS.
Ms. Marquez: for the joy and connection you cultivate, helping students feel seen and part of something bigger than themselves.
Ms. Coria: for the thoughtfulness you bring to each day, creating space for students to grow with confidence.
Ms. Kendra: for the patience and intention you hold, especially in moments that ask students to stretch and try again.
Mr. Tucker: for the way you challenge students to think deeply while building strong, trusting relationships.
Ms. Nitzsche: for your commitment to helping students find clarity, voice, and confidence in their learning.
Ms. Lisa: for the care and consistency you bring, supporting students in ways both seen and unseen.
Mr. K: for the energy and presence you bring to our community, meeting students right where they are.
Ms Mitchell: for your calm, grounded approach that helps students navigate both learning and themselves.
Ms. Grazyna: for the compassion and insight you offer, helping students feel supported and understood.
Ms Donna: for the expertise and care you bring supporting students in developing their reading skills and confidence as learners.
Ms. Naomi: for nurturing creativity and expression through visual arts, helping students see and share their perspectives in new ways.
Ms. Alex: for creating spaces where students can take risks, perform, and shine.
Mr. Brett: for guiding students with curiosity and care, inviting students to design, build, and learn through hands-on exploration.
Mr. Stark: for fostering strength, confidence, and teamwork by helping students build skills, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
Mr. Steve: for the countless ways you keep our school running and support our community every day.
Ms. Roshni: for the care and organization you bring to your work, supporting our staff and helping families feel welcome and supported from the very start.

To my TCS team: thank you. For your courage, your care, and your unwavering commitment to our students and to this community.

At TCS, self-portraits are more than an art project - they're a practice. We believe that real learning happens through observation, reflection, and revision. Self-portraits bring that belief to life. Each portrait captures not just how a child sees themselves, but how they're learning to share that perspective with the world. 💛

Weekly Note from Michelle, TCS Head of School:

There’s something that ties all of this together. You can see it across this week’s stories.

Students bringing ideas to life.
Taking creative risks.
Sharing their work beyond our walls.
Alumni stepping into what’s next with purpose.

This is the long view - and it doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s what happens when young people are given the space to think, create, collaborate, and take meaningful risks - and when a community surrounds them in that work.

Tonight’s BASH is part of that story.

It’s how we continue building a school where this kind of learning is not the exception, but the everyday. Where students don’t just move through school -but shape it, and carry it forward with them.

If you’re joining us tonight - thank you. I’m looking forward to being in the room together. TCS BASH info: oncau.se/tcs

And if you’re not able to be there, please know that your presence in this community, in all the ways you show up, matters deeply.

Michelle

Come celebrate with us at The Children's School 2026 Benefit & Bash: Education Built for Now! Build community with parents, friends, and staff and help us raise funds for the school.

We'll gather at Encore! by Little Gem, located in Oak Park, less than a mile west of the school. We will toast the school and enjoy hors d'ouevrues while supporting it's amazing work.

TCS is more than small school where kids love learning—it is the education that our young people need right now. Through honoring each child's voice and fostering critical thinking, TCS is preparing students to become lifelong problem-solvers and engaged citizens. It is preparation for the world as it is today and for changing the world of tomorrow.

Invite grandparents, friends, colleagues, and anyone in your life to help us raise funds to support TCS.

Weekly Note from Michelle, TCS Head of School:

This week marked my two-year anniversary at TCS.

I found myself pausing - just for a moment - in the middle of a very full week to take that in.

Two years of mornings in Group Gatherings. Two years of student projects, muddy Woods Days, hard conversations, laughter, problem-solving, and so many small, meaningful moments that don’t always make it into a newsletter - but are the heart of this place.

And this year, especially, has felt like an important chapter in that story.
We’ve been strengthening systems, deepening our program, and continuing to clarify who we are and what we stand for. That kind of work asks a lot of a community. It asks for patience, honesty, flexibility, and a willingness to stay in it together, even when things feel uncertain or unfinished.

What stays with me most is this: who we are as a community.

We are still growing. Still building. Still learning how to do this work together in ways that reflect our values. And at the same time, there is something deeply steady here - something grounded in connection, curiosity, and a shared belief that school can be a place where young people learn how to navigate complexity, not step away from it.

I also see it in our students every day - the way they show up for one another, the risks they take in their learning, the questions they ask, the courage they practice. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of the adults around them - and because of the kind of community we are building together.
I feel grateful to be doing this work alongside you - as families, as educators, as a community. Thank you for the trust, the partnership, and the many ways you show up for TCS.

Continuamos,
Michelle
