Dear students, take a look at this letter. If you are interested in this, contact the sender:

"As you know, BART has been a part of the Bay Area for over 50 years. We try hard to reach out to the community around us when we have needs. One need for us is design talent.

We have a website called Railgoods on which we sell BART-branded and transit-oriented items. We do not have enough design talent to keep the flow of fresh items going to the site. It would be great to come up with a way to work with students on various projects which would end up being sold on our site and at our special events. One of the main values to us would be driving more traffic to our site by having a more steady stream of interesting items even if any 1 item doesn't sell a lot of units.

From a project stand point, it would be a good way for students to learn about designing with an objective in mind or what would happen if they are working for a client. Anything we do would have a list of criteria that would have to be met versus just wanting a free form expression from the students. The winning design would need to stand out from a design stand point but also stand out because it met the needs of the client.

We can offer a monetary incentive to the student. The reality is the sales volume from any 1 item will never be very large. Plus, drafting a new agreement for a revenue stream for every student whose design we choose would probably be cost- and time-prohibitive. That's why we have thought that doing any project as a contest. A dollar prize will recognize the 1 or 2 "best" designs and most likely pay out the same or bigger amount than what a revenue stream would generate anyway. The size of the prize might vary based on how regularly we do this project. Quarterly would let us target the various seasons and also have a new project for the students on a regular basis.

The other benefit to us would be having the ability to do more testing of new designs. Without having a high design cost, we can do a run of 50 items, get reaction and then order more if it is a hit. If it fails to get any results then we can easily move on without having lost much (which is important for an organization that gets a lot of public scrutiny about its spending).

This is just an idea at this point, but we would love to at least test the idea at some point soon.

Thank you.

Will
