Join CCA Animation Events for a visiting artist screening and workshop with San Francisco-based independent animator Cole Montminy. Taking place Wednesday, March 15 at 7.15 PM in Timken Hall and Nave Alcove. Check the link in bio for more info!

Cole crafts miniature 2D animated scenes, hand-felted and hand stitched into music videos, simmering loops, and short films. Some of their loops are felted frame-by-frame onto the front of sweaters and shirts. Others span across quilt squares. Cole will be screening a selection of recent works including the most recent cut of their thesis film from San Francisco State University where they are a current MFA candidate.

Following the screening, Cole will lead a workshop where participants are invited to make a wearable animation. Participants are invited to bring an old piece of clothing to use as a surface for an animated loop. Shirts, scarves, pants, socks, or sweaters that you are willing to alter or adapt can be used for this workshop.

Introducing Sunny A. Smith, our Dean of Fine Arts, and their current exhibit, “The Compass Rose.” This exhibit is a new commission for Gallery 308, and takes place until March 12, 2023. The exhibition is free and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Smith states, “As an ancestral mapping system, The Compass Rose began as my attempt to see clearly a holistic portrait of myself and my ancestors as people fundamentally not-from-here: immigrants whose origin story is elsewhere. Since the human genome project was completed in 2003, which effectively proved that race is a social construct with no biological basis, DNA and crowd-sourced online technologies have gained in popularity. The Compass Rose deals with this emergence of human ancestral genealogy as science, as well as new understandings of generational trauma and how it is expressed through the study of epigenetics. Encompassing the last 400-year period of ongoing colonization, I use the project to chart the known harms my ancestors inflicted upon others, as well as those they experienced directly, vicariously, or through moral injury, in order to better understand what I am carrying from the past into the future.”

"Some weeks ago I was attempting to make a DIY mannequin still in the process) and decided it was a good idea to document the process. The documentation revealed the metaphor of socially constructed femininity. The tape that tightly compressed my body became a skin left behind like a mask-- powerless with the absence of my body. What is the plastic packing tape saying to you? How is your body and existence being compressed into a certain shape? I'd love to hear from your experiences".
