Bay Area Teacher Training Institute

Bay Area Teacher Training Institute The Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI) is a two-year elementary school combined masters and

BATTI has two programs--a multiple subject teacher training credential, and an Educational Leadership and Administrative Services credential. We help our teacher credential students find work as paid, full-time resident (assistant) teachers in one of 25 independent, charter, or public schools in the Bay Area while taking university credential classes two evenings a week. Strong mentoring, learning

by doing, and extensive public and independent school experience are hallmarks of our program. In our Educational Leadership program, our aspiring principals, department heads, and teacher-leaders commit themselves to a two-year school change project, which serves as the basis of their Master's paper. Our sequence of courses inspire our aspiring leaders to look at their own leadership style, what good school management and leadership requires, and the role of design thinking in transformative school change.

📣 Did you know that in an average classroom up to 70% of instructional time is dominated by teacher talk? 📣

While direct instruction certainly has its place, research consistently shows that increased student discourse is directly correlated with deeper learning outcomes.

At the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI), we're transforming this paradigm. Our teacher preparation program equips aspiring educators with proven strategies to amplify student voices and create more dynamic, interactive learning environments.

Some of our key approaches include:

📣 Structured academic discussions

📣 Think-pair-share activities that build confidence in expressing ideas

📣 Student-led inquiry and problem-solving sessions

📣 Strategic questioning techniques that promote deeper thinking

When students actively engage in meaningful discourse, they don't just learn content—they develop critical thinking skills, build confidence in their ideas, and learn to engage with diverse perspectives. They become active participants in their own learning journey rather than passive recipients of information.

The future of education isn't about teachers talking less—it's about students talking more. What strategies do you use to encourage student discourse in your classroom?

Meet Gina Cargas, one of our distinguished honorees for BATTI's inaugural Innovating for Impact celebration! 📚✨

As a teacher-librarian serving two schools in southeast San Francisco, Gina has reimagined the role of school libraries in creating equitable, experiential learning opportunities for students of color in underserved communities.

Her innovative approach to library leadership goes far beyond books. Through strategic partnerships and grants, Gina has brought transformative experiences to her students—from hosting acclaimed authors and local Black chefs to organizing environmental education field trips. A standout initiative was her partnership with SFPL that began with a pilot book club and grew so successful it expanded across multiple schools, giving students unprecedented opportunities to engage with literature and meet authors like Dr. Jewell Parker Rhodes.

Gina's commitment to culturally sustaining education led her to pursue a Fund for Teachers Fellowship in American Samoa and Tonga, deepening her understanding of Pacific Islander students' cultural heritage and enabling her to develop more inclusive curricula. Under her leadership, both school libraries have seen remarkable increases in student engagement, with circulation rising by up to 45%.

As a National Board Certified Library Media specialist, union representative, and mentor to new teachers, Gina exemplifies how educator leadership can create lasting change both inside and outside the library walls.

Join us on January 30th at Burke's to hear more about Gina's innovative approaches to educational equity! 🎓

Meet Christine Park, one of our outstanding honorees for BATTI's inaugural Innovating for Impact celebration! 🌟

Christine exemplifies how innovative educators can create lasting, positive change in their school communities. Recognizing the challenging transition students face entering high school, she developed a groundbreaking mental health unit for 8th graders that beautifully weaves together academic rigor with essential life skills.

Through thoughtful integration of literature, mindfulness practices, and hands-on coping strategies, Christine's students don't just analyze texts—they build vital tools for emotional resilience. Her innovative "Pre-DK" (pre-disaster kit) project empowers students to proactively identify and symbolically represent their personal coping strategies, preparing them for the challenges ahead.

Beyond the classroom, Christine has transformed her school's culture by creating joyful cross-divisional communities. From organizing welcoming ceremonies for incoming middle schoolers to establishing meaningful mentorship programs across grades, she has fostered a more connected and supportive learning environment.

Christine's impact extends city-wide through her leadership in The Educators' Cooperative, where she serves on the advisory committee and shares her expertise through panel discussions on critical educational topics.

Join us on January 30th at Burke's to hear more about Christine's innovative approaches to education! 🎓
