OCOPE OCOPE is the sole bargaining agent for the approximately 190 employees of Oberlin College who hold Administrative Assistant positions.

Oberlin College Office and Professional Employees (O.C.O.P.E.) is the sole bargaining agent for the approximately 190 employees of Oberlin College who hold Administrative Assistant positions. Our union had its start in the late 1960's when a group of college employees joined together to change salary and benefit inequities that existed in the clerical, technical, and service employee groups. The first contract for Administrative Assistants was signed in 1971.

OCOPE GIVES BACK
At our membership meeting Tuesday, 12/11, we will be collecting donations for Toys for Tots and Oberlin Community Services.
Members who wish to donate to Toys for Tots can bring new, unwrapped toys for boys, girls and babies (ages 0-14) and/or non-perishable food items for Oberlin Community Services. Some items on their "wish list" include canned goods, dry pasta, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, tuna, rice, crackers. Cans with pull top lids and microwavable items are especially helpful to the homeless or people without kitchen facilities.
Donations can also be dropped off with any board member or steward before noon Tuesday, 12/11.
Thank you in advance for your contributions this holiday season!

Earlier this week the OCOPE executive board was notified by the College that four bargaining unit positions would be eliminated effective June 30. A member holding one of those positions was notified Tuesday afternoon. After consulting OPEIU and our attorney, the board wrote HR, President Ambar, Dean Elgren, and members of senior staff to ask that they suspend further action and notifications until OCOPE could discuss other ways to avoid job losses with the College. Board members met with the College on Wednesday, but they rejected our appeal and notified the other three members this morning.
There are several open positions at this time, and it is our sincere hope that no displaced members will be out of work. The OCOPE Board will continue to look for other solutions and insist that our members' contractual rights are upheld. We ask that all members remain vigilant and immediately report any students and/or A&PS doing our bargaining unit work.

In Solidarity,
Tracy Tucker

OCOPE and SLAC (Student Labor Action Coalition) are working together to plan a silent protest action on Wednesday, 4/5 at noon. OCOPE members and students will gather outside Craig Lecture Hall in the Science Center tomorrow before the start of the noon College Faculty meeting where the indefinite suspension of faculty research status will be discussed.
Budget cuts started with OCOPE positions being eliminated, and now faculty research status is being suspended. What is happening to the learning and labor at Oberlin College?

We hope you will join us in solidarity.

Students will carry signs:
First they came for OCOPE jobs,
and I did not speak out –
Because I was not OCOPE.
Then they came for FACULTY...
