Early childhood education majors Ashley Ardon and Katelyn Hurst are demonstrating how a better understanding of literacy can help children succeed long before they learn to read or write.

Read more below about their journeys to becoming early childhood educators, the impact of working in the Melba S. Lehner Children's School as a training lab, and how they hope to provide children with skills that will set them up for the rest of their lives!

Day of Giving is live for the next 24 hours, or until noon tomorrow, April 10! We invite you to make a difference by donating to our Amplify Weber State education initiatives.

Endow the Teacher Assistant Pathway to Teaching (TAPT) Program: The TAPT program takes experienced teacher assistants, nominated by local school districts or charter schools, and supports them in becoming licensed teachers. Your support will help us recruit a consistent number of students each year and provide a reliable teacher workforce to the community.

Help CAPES! Make a Difference for More Children with Disabilities: Your donations will go towards purchasing adaptive equipment, holding end-of-semester celebrations, and hiring student interns to manage operations of the CAPES! program.

Thank you for your consideration! Please visit give.weber.edu/dayofgiving to learn more or to donate today.

Dr. Shirley Dawson, Professor Emeritus at Weber State University, received the 2026 Outstanding Leadership Award at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention & Expo earlier this week. This award honors a CEC member who has provided exemplary leadership to the organization at the unit, division, or national/international levels over an extended period.

Dr. Dawson taught in our teacher education department and served as the director of the Teacher Assistant Pathway to Teaching program and as the chapter advisor for the Student Council for Exceptional Children before retiring in 2025. Her impact has lasted long beyond her final days at Weber. “Even now I continue to see her leadership in action as I work alongside her current students in practicum and student teaching roles,” shares Megan Tingey, one of Dr. Dawson’s former students. “While she often calls her students ‘wonderful,’ it is Dr. Dawson herself who truly embodies what it means to be an outstanding professor and leader.”

Congratulations, Dr. Dawson, on this well-deserved recognition! Read more about her award and achievements at exceptionalchildren.org/blog/meet-our-2026-professional-award-recipients

Adventure loading in 3…2…1

Outdoor and Community Recreation Education is looking to fuel their students’ passion, minds and bodies by providing nutritious food to students in the field.

It’s hard to learn, let alone reach new heights, on an empty stomach. Proper nutrition and hydration are essential to fueling discovery, whether on the water, in the mountains, or on the trail.

Help fight food insecurity in the field by visiting: give.weber.edu/dayofgiving
