What’s in a name? In microbiology... absolutely everything! πŸ§«πŸ“‹

Huge congratulations to WSU Microbiology Professor Dr. Matthew B. Crook on his latest publication! πŸ‘ Dr. Crook noticed a major naming violation in the bacterial world that left a specific organism with an illegal classification under international code.

To fix it, he officially introduced a newly proposed genus name to the scientific community: "Candidatus Nostocimimus". πŸ‘‘πŸ¦

From correcting global taxonomy records to mentoring our students in the lab, our faculty are truly top-tier. Read more about his work at the link in our bio! πŸ“²πŸ’»

What does commitment to student success actually look like? It looks like a department rewriting the rules on course costs. πŸ“‰βœ¨

A massive congratulations to the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department on receiving the Affordable Course Materials Award! πŸ€πŸ’œ

Instead of sticking with standard, expensive textbooks, our chemistry faculty spent serious time evaluating resources to shift toward OERs (Open Educational Resources) and library-accessible options. The result?

πŸ‘‰ Major financial relief for students.
πŸ‘‰ Zero compromise on academic excellence.
πŸ‘‰ Equal access to high-quality learning for everyone.

From future medical professionals to research scientists, our students are thriving because financial barriers aren't standing in their way. πŸŒπŸŽ’

From Weber State to the national stage! πŸ’œβœ¨

Huge congratulations to WSU College of Science alumna Noelle Foster, who was just named a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Scholar! πŸŽ“πŸ”¬

The NSF GRFP is an incredibly competitive and prestigious program that supports outstanding graduate students pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in STEM. Noelle, who is currently continuing her research journey in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University, was selected as one of this year's elite winners! 🌲🐟

We are so incredibly proud to watch our alumni take the foundation they built here at Weber State and use it to lead vital scientific research out in the world.

Join us in celebrating Noelle in the comments! πŸ‘‡πŸŽ‰

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us for the Ogden Surgical-Medical Society Conference held right here on campus last week! 🩺πŸ₯

It was an incredible opportunity to showcase Weber State’s deep commitment to shaping the next generation of community-driven healthcare professionals. Attendees heard powerful insights from our very own leadership and expert faculty:

WSU Interim President. Leslie Durham
Interim College of Science Dean, Laine Berghout
Dumke College of Health Professions, Health Sciences Faculty, Travis Price

They highlighted our faculty and staff's relentless pursuit of excellence in research, education, and service. πŸ”¬πŸ“šβœ¨

We are so grateful to host our region's community health leadersβ€”including the many proud WSU alumni who returned to campus! When we connect, collaborate, and innovate together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve for community health. πŸ’œπŸ§¬

Real research, real experience. πŸŒ²πŸ•οΈ

Weber State students and faculty are officially on the ground putting our Yellowstone field site to work! A team of students and professors recently collaborated on a massive surveying effort to understand the site’s ecosystem from every angle.

From tracking animal pathways to setting up overnight camera traps (which immediately caught a cougar! 🀯), our wildcats are doing the foundational work that will define future student projects.

Shoutout to our students and faculty from Zoology, Geosciences, and Microbiology for bringing their expertise to the mountain. More trips are already being planned as we look to expand research possibilities across the College of Science.

If you're a student ready to do real-world field research, the opportunities are right here. πŸŽ’πŸ§ͺ
