Happy Women’s Equality Day! Today we commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote being protected by the 19th Amendment. And, our sister Alice Carpenter (Barnard, 1901) and many other trailblazers played a key role in its passing. But as amazing as this is, some laws and policies prevented many people of color (Black people, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos) from voting for years.

I never thought I would be the kind of person to join a sorority, but as soon as I met the Gamma Phi women, I knew I was at home. They radiated such a loving and positive energy right away.”

Check out what learning means to our sister Shelbi: The Gamma Phi Beta core value of learning encourages me to stay motivated in my academics and keep myself educated about what is going on in my community. One new-found passion I have is writing in my blog. A lesson I’ve learned through writing in this blog is that there is a need for me to be educated before speaking words of wisdom to others. Through each blog I write, I learn something that helps me to be better than I was yesterday. Last week we highlighted our sorority’s value of Labor!

The value of labor in Gamma Phi Beta represents actively being involved in our sisterhood and in our service to others. Labor encompasses a dedication to personal achievement and drives for chapter success through our philanthropy events, community service endeavors, Panhellenic events (homecoming!), and in inspiring the highest type of womanhood!

We asked our sister Annie what labor means to her: “Labor is one of my favorite core values in Gamma Phi Beta because it is something that I consistently strive for. Upon meeting all of the women in Gamma Phi, I realized how hard each person works on a daily basis for their education and this sisterhood. Being surrounded by such strong and motivated women, made me realize my potential and the possibilities that I’m capable of achieving. Demonstrating this value reflects my work ethic and overall character, as well as that of my sisters.”
