Creighton University's Student Organization of Social Workers - SOSW

Creighton University's Student Organization of Social Workers - SOSW Social work is devoted to helping individuals, families, groups and organizations function the best that they can in their environments.

Social work is devoted to helping individuals, families, groups and organizations function the best they can in their environments. The phrase "in their environment" points to a unique characteristic of social work, one that sets it apart from other helping professions. Social workers are as concerned with helping clients enhance their social functioning as they are with helping systems meet the n

eeds of clients in an effective and humane manner. The social work profession has its own body of knowledge, code of ethics, practice standards, credentials, state certification, and accreditation of education programs. Creighton University's Social Work Program has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1991. Accreditation makes it possible for social work graduates to qualify for state certification and/or licensing in states where credentialing is mandated and to enter advanced standing graduate social work programs.

Hi all! We hope you're all staying healthy and well. We are continuing with our fundraiser and have decided that we will hold off on buying supplies for Heart Ministry Center. Please consider donating if possible, even $1 helps. Thank you all for the continued support!

In honor of social work month, the Creighton Social Work Honor Society, Phi Alpha, will be raising money to help donate hygiene products to the Heart Ministry Center here in Omaha, Nebraska. We received a $1,000 grant from Phi Alpha Honor Society that we are working to match! :) All of these products will be greatly appreciated by local families in need. Please help us reach our goal by Venmoing -Dineen (our Phi Alpha Treasurer). Any amount helps -- Thank you so much!

Another one of our graduates, Halie, is serving in CapCorps! Here is a little more about her experience: "I am a post-grad volunteer with CapCorps, an organization run by the Capuchin Franciscan Friars. The placement sites are in Washington DC or Cleveland, OH. Currently, I am living in Cleveland doing my work at a doctors office where I am processing referrals. With these referrals, they are often for refugees and I help the refugees call the hospitals to schedule their appointments by getting an interpreter on the line. I try to have the patient do all they can on the phone with the interpreter instead of scheduling the appointment for them so they can learn to advocate for themselves with the — sometimes daunting — American health care system. CapCorps itself has a house friar at each site where he comes over every week for a community night; we also commit to five nights a week for someone to lead some type of prayer and someone else is in charge of cooking dinner.

Overall it has been an amazing experience and our program director really does work with each person to see what they are interested in doing. We have retreats, it is a close-knit community, and each weekend is full of something new and exciting!"

One of our alumnae, Sarah, is currently doing post-graduate volunteering in Ecuador! Here is a bit of what she has to say about her experience thus far: "I have found this to be the most surprising lesson: that I have left no significant or large impact on the lives of the poor. They have loved me in ways I only imagined God had the capacity to love, but then again God reveals himself through the face of the l***r, the addict, the single mother, and the crying child. But I have also learned that it takes effort on our end to be intentional with our relationships so we can allow others to change us. We are not simply changed without any effort."
