DOUBLE RECOGNITION!

Double resident of the month nominations this March for Heider Hall; congratulations to Eric Hugenberg and Colton Cubrich!

As an RA Eric demonstrates building community both while working the front desk as well as hosting programs for the entire building to attend. Recently Eric created an event entitled "Cash Elevator" a play on the TV show Cash Cab. He interacted with residents as they got on the elevator, giving them prizes for correct responses. Eric also greets people as they enter and exit the building, an attribute not so common amongst desk staff.

Colton Cubrich began hosting Weekly Heider Movie Nights on Thursdays about 4 weeks ago in the public lounge in Heider. Colton creates the fliers, cooks appetizers for the event, and promotes throughout the building. Each week more and more people have attended Heider Movie Nights and has become a gathering place of movie enthusiasts. Colton has no connection to the department of residence life nor Resident Hall Council, yet still strives to create community amongst the Heider Residents.

Degleman Residence Hall has chosen John Godoy as their February resident of the month!

He offers the Deglman community much needed diversity and perspective. Another resident said," I was a much worse off person until John taught me to love myself and my identities. I know our community has benefitted so much from John."

NRHH thanks you for making Creighton a better place, John!

Thank you to Kaylee Arakaki, who is a great addition to the Deglman Residence Hall!

Kaylee constantly offers a smiling and friendly face to the residents as they walk in the building. She is a consistently positive presence at the desk, and I believe that she really makes the residents feel as though they are at home. She is always willing to do what is necessary to help me in my role as ARD. Kaylee has taken on the responsibility of desk programming willingly and without being prompted to. She recently created posters that introduce the residents to each of the desk receptionists. The posters have information such as the desk receptionists' names, hometowns, favorite foods, and their pictures, as well as fun facts about the desk receptionists. They encourage communication between the residents and the desk receptionists outside of the normal realm of conversation that would take place in that interaction.

Kyla is a wonderful addition to Residence Life! She works hard as a desk receptionist at the Davis front desk!

Kyla Salazar was recently promoted to the DR2 position and she has taken the responsibility in this role with great pride. She is consitantly a smiling face at the front desk and helps create a welcoming community to Davis Square. Davis can be a difficult building to create resident interaction at the front desk, but Kyla takes this and makes sure that she is saying hello to everyone that comes into the building and providing them with the best customer service that she can.

Dr. Faith Kurtyka has been a faculty presence in the Cortina living-learning community (housed in Deglman Hall) for three years.

Her course, Cortina Composition, focuses on the way language is used daily life and to help students reflect on their use of language to advantage and disadvantage groups of people. Dr. Kurtyka is committed to exposing students to the reality around them in her course. She has students go on fieldtrips in the Omaha area to explore the way language is used as propoganda in the area. She invites students to visit her home frequently and takes them to local coffee shop to get more exposure to language in the community. She has given generously of her time to foster student learning. She attended the Cortina retreat on a weekend this September and offered the students a session about difficult dialogue and getting outside one's comfort zone. Dr. Kurtyka is a true education in the Jesuit tradition, as she exercises cura personalis (care for the whole person) for each student, taking time to get to know them, their interests and desires. She is a passionate educator and we are lucky to have her in our program.

Congratulations to Elei Titiml for being nominated as an outstanding resident of Deglman Residence Hall!

Elei brings a lot to Deglman Hall and the Cortina Community. Her passion for helping residents is inspiring. Despite her busy schedule, she is able to maintain great relationships with her residents. She is filled with positive energy and enthusiasm that helps build community and the Deglman Hall Staff. She loves working for those who are underprivileged and having conversations about these topics. She showed great leadership and courage by standing in front of the Cortina Community on their semester retreat to talk about the importance of some of the activities that residents were participating in. This talk inspired many residents who felt the same way but were not comfortable to speak up on their own.
