Before, during, and after our planting session on Sunday morning! 🌿🌾☀️🪴
Sustain UNO’s final project of the semester was to purchase nearly 400 native plant plugs from Bumbling Bee Native Wildflowers and help spread pocket prairie space on the UNO campus! Some plants include milkweed, coneflowers, goldenrod (the Nebraska state flower), columbine, prairie dropped, blue grama, purple love grass, and prairie spiderwort!
A pocket prairie is a small, intentionally created area that mimics a natural prairie ecosystem. It’s rich in native plant diversity, including grasses and wildflowers, and serves as a habitat for local wildlife such as pollinators, songbirds, and small mammals. While planting, we saw many curious birds and a campus groundhog!
Prairies efficiently capture carbon underground, prevent erosion due to their extensive root systems, clean and filter water, and create nutritious soil as roots decompose over time.
Please take care not to step on the plants, especially as they are just beginning to grow. Soon, the space will be filled with plant growth + a sign about pocket prairies! Also, take a look at the new insect houses in the already established pocket prairie space.
