It is almost graduation day! Looking at this beautiful ceramic piece that Nia-Victoria Gathers created reminds us that she, along with all of our studio art graduates, will soon be starting new chapters in their lives. We certainly hope they all continue to create and inspire us just as they did while here at Creighton!

Students in Rachel Mindrup's Artistic Anatomy are recreating contemporary painter Max Ginsburg's 2010 oil painting titled, "Bus Stop". Each student has chosen one of the figures to model themselves after and recreate their self-portrait in charcoal (with a thoughtfully placed color accent). Tracing paper is laid over the top, so they can then ecorche the figure (essentially draw all the muscles and bones) to see if they understand surface anatomy. We can't wait to see how this group project turns out!

A few nights ago, we celebrated the achievements of our wonderful studio art students. As a faculty, we feel lucky to have the privilege to teach so many interesting, talented, hardworking, and creative students in our program. Additionally, we also celebrated the accomplishment of Emerson Pappas (studio art and chemistry) for earning the 2026 Frances Kraft Memorial Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts (outstanding senior award). Congrats Emerson!

Last weekend, Anna Cheesewright, a studio art and biology honors student on the pre-dental track, was commissioned to create a custom oil painting for the Sing Omaha Concert. The event showcased three newly commissioned paintings (one of which was Anna's) and three world premiere choral works, blending visual and musical art forms. Thank you to Dr. Matt Hill for including our very talented student for this wonderful experience!

We love when our students have such wonderful support! Seeing grandparents at an art opening is awesome! Anyone who has been in class with Cate knows her work is going to involve climbing! Over her time at Creighton she has created beautiful work (painting, prints and drawings) centered around her love of the sport. We think she should put them all together and have a solo exhibition!

This past week Professor Alston took his upper-level figure sculpture students to the Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy (HETRA) to draw horses from life. This is the beginning work for their equine sculptures. HETRA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is simple yet profound: to improve the quality of life, both physically and emotionally, of adults and children of all ability levels through equine-assisted activities. Hopefully our students will have many more trips out and get to spend more time with the horses!

"Daughters of Daughters of Daughters" is the 1st place winner of our Kappa Pi Art exhibition. Painting in a triptych fashion, Anika Roddy's oil painting is tiled together in the same way old photos are pieced together in albums. Anika is a freshman honors student pursuing a major in studio art and art history with a minor in French. Way to go Anika! The show is up through April 30!

Isabella Taddeini (double major in studio art + graphic design) is one of our talented students who has artwork on display at our current exhibition "Intersections" at the Hot Shops. In her words, "Taking Sculpture at Creighton has been one of my favorite classes. Professor Alston is incredibly thoughtful with his feedback; he consistently pushed me beyond what I thought my limits were and challenged me in ways that have been impactful to my growth as an artist. At the same time, his class has created a supportive environment where every student is encouraged to improve and fully develop their work, no matter how ambitious the project may seem. One aspect of the class that was extremely helpful is beginning each project with drawing, which helps build a strong understanding of form before moving into clay. This process has strengthened my ability to think spatially and transfer ideas into three-dimensional work. It’s a demanding class in the best way, pushing me to do better while giving me the support to succeed." We hope you can take in this sculpture in person while the show is going on!
