Today in Black History

On Feb 8, 1986,
Figure skater Debi Thomas, who was also a pre-med student at Stanford University, became the first African American to win the Women's Singles of the U.S. National Figure Skating Championship competition!

Today in 1986, Oprah Winfrey became the First African American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show

In 1985, Brenda Renee Pearson became the first Black female to record the State of the Union message delivered by the president in the House of Chambers.

February 3 in Black History...
In 1988, there was a Confederate Flag Protest in Montgomery Alabama led by Thomas Reed, president of the NAACP Alabama Chapter

In 1989, Bill White is named president of the National League, becoming the first African American to head a major sports league.

In 1920, the Negro Baseball League is Founded
and in 1947, Marlene Nourbese Philip is awarded the 1988 Casa de las Americas prize for poetry

In 1981, the Air Force Academy dropped its ban on sickle cell trait

And in 1956, Autherine J Lucy is the first Black student to attend the University of Alabama. She graduated in 1992 with a master's degree in education and her daughter graduated the same day with a bachelor's degree in corporate finance.

Happy Black History Month! Here are a couple of things in history that happened today, February 1st

Langston Hughes was born in 1902 and wrote 15 collections of poetry, 2 autobiographies, 7 collections of short stories, and several books and translations.

The 13th Amendment which abolished slavery was adopted by the 38th Congress in 1865

John Sweat Rock became the first African American to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and first Black person to speak before the U.S. House of Representatives today in 1865.

CBS premieres on Good Times in 1972

Before Black History Month became a month long celebration in 1972, it was Negro History Week by Carter G. Woodson and it began today in 1926
