💜Today we wear purple💜. With survivors, always.
💜
This week we read everyday messages again: monitoring, isolation, financial abuse, and gaslighting. We asked a better question than "why not leave," and we practiced the words that help.
💜
Join us today for the DV Awareness Info Fair and purple group photo. Stop by our Resource Fair from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Bietz Center (Oct. 29th). You'll meet local partners, including Family Justice Center: Chattanooga, Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, the Chattanooga Police Department's Victim Support Services, and Harbor Safe House, along with resources from our own campus.
💜
One question for you: which message will you read differently now? Drop the number in the comments (1 Monitoring, 2 Isolation, 3 Money, 4 Gaslighting). Your answers help us decide what to teach next year.

It's that time of year again, where on Giving Tuesday we support the Feed My Sheep Food Pantry, and continue to help students facing food insecurity. Every contribution makes a difference in helping provide essential food supplies to those in need! 💛

Want to learn how you can help? Scan the QR code to learn more and discover ways to make an impact. Together, we can make sure no student has to face hunger alone.

Why does a School of Social Work talk about domestic violence?

Because survivors meet social workers everywhere: schools, hospitals, shelters, courts, churches, and campuses.

The work takes trauma-informed care, safety planning, advocacy, faith-sensitive support, and policy. The Violence Against Women Act (1994) helped create the national hotline that survivors call every day. Policy is practice, too.

Tomorrow: wear purple💜.

"Why don't they just leave?"

Wrong question. The better one: what is making it unsafe or impossible to leave?

Real barriers include fear the abuse will get worse, no money or housing, children, pets, or immigration concerns, and hope, love, faith, or shame. Leaving is often the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship.

So when a friend tells you something is wrong, your first words matter more than your advice:
Instead of "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" try "Thank you for trusting me."
Instead of "Just leave them." try "What do you need right now?"
Instead of "Are you sure it's that bad?" try "I believe you. This is not your fault."

Save this one. You may need it for someone you love.

💜 We’re going purple for survivors.

For the rest of Domestic & Dating Violence Awareness Month, the School of Social Work is wearing purple online, and we’d love for you to join us.

Swipe to find our photo frame, made for our Southern community. Add it to your profile picture or story to show you stand with survivors.

How to use it:

Screenshot the frame, or save it from our story highlight “DV Frame”
Open Canva or any photo app and place your photo under the frame

Post it and tag us so we can reshare💜

No photo editing? Stop by the Bietz Center this Thursday, Oct 29, from 12 to 2 pm, and wear purple for our group photo.

Using the frame doesn’t mean sharing your story. It means telling the people around you, “I’m a safe person to talk to.”

Help is available 24/7: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. In Chattanooga: 423-755-2700.

Abuse rarely shows up as a punch. Most of the time, it shows up as a text.

"Share your location. I just worry about you." Sounds like love. Read it again.

This week, the School of Social Work is closing Domestic Violence Awareness Month with "Read It Again," a 4-day series that translates everyday messages into what they can really mean.

Today: monitoring, isolation, financial abuse, and gaslighting. Swipe through all four.

Why here? Women ages 18 to 24 experience the highest rates of intimate partner violence (NCADV). That is a college campus.

Save this, and send it to a friend who should see it.

Thank you, Tekoa, for spending time with our Intro to Social Work students! 💚

Tekoa earned her BSW and MSW here at Southern and now serves as a social worker in the field. She shared her real-world experience, and our students left with a clearer picture of where this path can lead.

We love when our alumni come home!

What a Tuesday!

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann joined the School of Social Work at Southern Adventist University to talk with our BSW and MSW students about federal student loan changes and what they mean for social work education.

Our students brought great questions, and he shared how Tennessee is responding and how he can carry these concerns to Washington.

The need is real: community and social service jobs are projected to grow much faster than average through 2035 (BLS). 💚

And happy belated birthday, Congressman! 🎂
