Congratulation to our very own Dr. Abdullah Khan.!!!! We are celebrating your recent National Science Foundation Grant Award title: “Building of Adaptive Communities Via Interdisciplinary Research and Training” with your Co-P.I.: Dr. Kamal Chowdhury.

Synopsis:
Climate change-driven extreme weather events or natural disasters are posing significant threats to lives and livelihoods. Previous research suggests that the historically underserved communities often face disproportionate vulnerabilities due to various socio-economic, and environmental factors. Therefore, a multipronged approach combining interdisciplinary research and training is needed to embolden community adaptiveness and resilience to mitigate challenges posed by climate change. The empirical research will explore stakeholder preferences for inclusive economic resilience in underserved regions. The training of students will improve their interdisciplinary learning and knowledge base, adaptation skills, resiliency, and entrepreneurial acumen to tackle environmental challenges. These multipronged activities will enhance underserved communities’ overall environmental awareness, research skills, and economic and entrepreneurship development capacities. Building of such adaptive communities will strengthen the overall socio-economic resilience for all Americans.

Bank of America will invest $500,000 to support the University’s Center for Social Justice and the Pathways From Prison Program. The Pathways From Prison Program is a historic collaboration between Claflin and the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) that provides incarcerated individuals in South Carolina access to the University’s exceptional academic programs.

Incarcerated individuals that meet Claflin and SCDC requirements can earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, and organizational management. They can also earn minors and certificate credentials.

Bank of America's investment will support student scholarships and enhance technological resources such as laptops, keyboards, printers, routers, and wi-fi hotspots. Funding for the partnership will also be used to increase the number of qualified faculty and staff to ensure incarcerated students receive the same high-quality educational experience that has earned Claflin national recognition as one of the nation’s premier liberal arts universities.
