On this date (Oct. 9) in 1635, Roger Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for preaching "dyvers newe & dangerous opinions," which included what later became the first clause of the First Amendment, that government "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Williams later founded the colony of Rhode Island, where any religion could be practiced freely.

At the time of the American Revolution in 1776, Blacks saw the disconnect between the assertion of the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal" and the reality of slavery at the time.

They began to raise questions.

"State constitutions are easier to amend than their federal counterpart [and] are more responsive to local interests . . . . โ€œIf George Washington had said, โ€˜Officers, Iโ€™m with you. I will lead you. We are marching on Congress,โ€™ he could have done it. He could have made himself king in this moment.โ€

That is how Prof. Greg Jackson described Washington's leadership and restraint as commander in chief of the Continental Army and which he later showed as president of the United States.
