You may have noticed a change in name! Formerly Physics Women Society (PWS) is now the UCF Women in Physics Society (WiP)! This change was made to conform to APS naming conventions and to unify our organization with other WiP around the world.

Also, at this time I would like to introduce our new officers: Jenny Larson (president), Stephanie Jarmak (Vice-president), Katie McIntyre (Secretary), and Riley Havel (Treasurer). We look forward to supporting this organization and hosting many events beneficial to all. Stay tuned for more updates on fun WiP events and a schedule for the upcoming year!

Academia is a stressful setting. As the summer semester ramps up make sure to check out Nature's collection on science careers and mental health. You can always reach out to PWS if you need someone to talk to!

Articles in the collection include:
- What to do to improve postgraduate mental health
- I’d whisper to my student self: you are not alone
- How to handle the dark days of depression
- Feeling overwhelmed by academia? You are not alone
- Time to talk about why so many postgrads have poor mental health
- Mental health: Caught in a trap
- Graduate survey: A love–hurt relationship
- Psychology: Faking it

Collection home Intro:
Science’s hyper-competitive environment and its ‘publish or perish’ culture can breed anxiety and depression. Nature's latest global graduate survey, published in October 2017, showed 12% of all respondents had sought help for anxiety or depression caused by their PhD studies. And an international study published in Nature Biotechnology in March 2018 provided compelling evidence of a mental health crisis in graduate education with nearly 40% of respondents showing signs of moderate to severe depression. Our online resource aims to highlight this important issue and provides support and advice, not only to scientists struggling with poor mental health but also their colleagues, mentors, and supervisors.

This collection offers advice from researchers with personal experience of poor mental health and links to relevant studies. This includes Nature's 2017 PhD survey, which showed 12% had sought help for anxiety caused by their studies.

In the late 1800s, a group of women hunched over their desks in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as they cataloged hundreds of thousands of stars using a system they invented. They worked six days a week making calculations that would eventually inform the discovery of the universe’s expansion. They came...

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin is one of 26 women featured in the excellent book “Amelia to Zora: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed The World” for ages 7 to 12 at https://www.amightygirl.com/amelia-to-zora

She is also one of 50 notable women of science featured in the stunning illustrated biography, "Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers," for ages 9 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/women-in-science

Happy International Women's Day! Today we bring to you Gender Matters by Jennifer Blue, Adrienne Traxler, and Ximena Cid.
Make sure to read the article in this month's issue of Physics Today. Blue et at. highlight the factors that contribute to women leaving and never entering the field of physics. Not only that, the authors also discuss what physicists can do to overcome them.
Share this article with anyone who needs a reminder that gender matters!
