Howler's Theatre

Howler's Theatre "A howl can certainly reach through to the guts." Doing theatre for the love of it without the need for elaborate sets, space and promotions.

Artists hoping to go back to the basics: story, actor(s), and audience. Staying faithful to the scripts and character development. A theatre company existing for the people. Charging minimal amounts for admittance. Actors using their craft to entertain, move, challenge and change their audience. Willing to be nomadic to find performance spaces. Allowing actors, directors and producers the chance t

o develop pet projects and follow their passion. The name comes from the many uses of a "howl". You can howl with pleasure, pain, joy, glee, protest, laughter... Just howl. From Peter Brook's book The Empty Space: "I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.".

“THE HOWLS”
by Howler’s Theatre

Basic Premise: Call for authors to submit ORIGINAL monologues dealing with a specific theme. The theme will be provided exclusively by Howler’s Theatre. One Director and one Actor will be assigned to each monologue for performance to video.

- Monologues can be of any length between 1-8 minutes.
- Monologues can be of any genre or style (dramatic, comedic, absurdist, silent, etc)
- There will be a payment of $50 dollars to all authors that have their original work selected for the project. This payment will be a BUYOUT of the work. There will NOT be further rights or royalties attributed to the author. However, whenever the work appears in subsequent performances, video streams, or is in any way showcased to any kind of audience, the work will be attributed to the author as their creation.
- A director will be chosen for each accepted submission.
- Each director will choose an actor that will perform the monologue.
- Directors and Actors will be paid an equal split of all money that comes in from ticket sales. Should the amount paid to each Director and Author exceed $50, the authors of the pieces will then be included in the split so that all participants (Authors, Directors, Actors) all receive an equal payment.
- Payment will be sent no later than 7 days after the final pay-per-stream day so that all payments can be sent in full at one time.
- Tickets will be $5.00. After the event has streamed for a month, it will be moved to the YouTube channel for this project and will be streamed for free.
- A portion or percentage of all income will be donated to a charity. A different charity will be selected for each streaming project.
- When a monologue is ready for performance, it will be filmed and edited by a 1 or 2-person crew assigned by Howler’s Theatre. The location is entirely the choice of the Director, but MUST allow both crews, and cast to properly maintain social distance. Actors will NOT BE MASKED for the performance of the monologue (unless it is specifically written to be performed with a mask.) The location must allow for an unmasked actor to be safe while unmasked.
- Film crew will always be 6+ feet away and will ALWAYS BE MASKED.
- All cost of filming will be paid by Howler’s Theatre.
- All costs for props, costumes, make up, hair, or any other accessory, will be entirely the responsibility of the Director and Actor.
- ALL WRITERS, ACTORS, AND DIRECTORS WILL BE CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO PROMOTE THE PROJECT TWICE A WEEK ON AT LEAST TWO (2) MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok) DURING THE TIME THAT A PROJECT IS STREAMED ON THE PAY-PER-STREAM SITE.
o It is acceptable to share the event created by Howler’s Theatre. (Howler’s Theatre will create a specific event for all applicable social media formats.)
o All custom promotions created by individual users must tag ALL OTHER participants in the project. An exact list of all Directors, Actors, Producers, and Writers and their respective tags, handles, hash tags, etc. will be provided to all participants.
o The charitable organization that will benefit from the pay-per-stream performance must be tagged in all posts as well.
o Once a project has been moved to a non-pay-per-stream site, there will be no obligation to continue to promote that project.

- Actors and Directors will have two (2) weeks to prepare their monologues for filming.
- ALL DIRECTORS AND ACTORS THAT HAVE BEEN PAIRED TOGETHER WILL BE CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO POST AT LEAST ONE (1) VIDEO OR PHOTOGRAPH TO AT LEAST TWO (2) MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS SHOWING SOME KIND OF “BEHIND THE SCENES” WORK OF THE PREPARATION OF THEIR MONOLOGUE. (e.g. Still image from ZOOM, cell phone images or video of an early meeting or initial table read, bloopers, etc.) The idea is to prepare audiences for the project before it is released.
- Howler’s Theater will collect Headshots or other forms of promotional photos from all participants and will have permission to use those photos to promote the project.

Writers wanted:

THE CANTERBURY TALES PROJECT

The goal is to have writers take one of the stories from Canterbury Tales and make it a 5-10 minute scene or monologue. The scenes can be done in the original language, modern English, song (read to the end for this exciting possibility!), or even another language all together. And The Host character will tie them all together.

Once finished and compiled then directors will be brought on board to cast and mold their individual scene(s).

I’ll include all the writers in a group so we can answer any questions and make sure we’re all on the same page! You can let us know if you use a character from another story to move yours along, to be a foil, etc... We’ll set it up so that character integrity is preserved.

Also, DIRECTORS, I will be coming for you next to choose scenes, cast, and direct them. Bringing in your unique style and point of view!

STORY:
A group of travelers happen to come together at the Tabard Inn while plague ravages the world killing over 60% of the population. The guests are on a pilgrimage to Canterbury to visit the grave of Thomas Becket, hoping that the rumors of miracle healings are true. On this night The Host has gathered hers or his guests to spin their stories in a tale-telling-game of which each story teller is a contestant.

Comment here or Message me (Scott Browning) if you’re interested; I will add you to the group and we can go from there!

ALSO!!! There are at least three incredibly talented musicians on board! So if you want your story to be a musical then let me know and I will make the connection!

Memento mori!
