COVID-19 has created the greatest mental health, substance abuse, and overdose crisis across Florida and our nation in U.S. history.

Before the pandemic hit U.S. shores, nearly 450,000 people across the nation had lost their lives due to opioid-related overdose in one decade.

Since then, communities across America and in the state of Florida are experiencing an unprecedented rise in opioid overdose and preventable deaths amid this pandemic.

Societal shutdown and mass quarantine have taken a massive toll on the mental health of citizens across our region, resulting in a staggering amount of overdose and deaths of despair this year.

A recent data study we conducted analyzing 2020 data from the Florida Department of Health found that overdose deaths have increased by a staggering 70% across Central Florida during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown and are only expected to increase by year’s end.

Although the numbers may seem bleak, there are new strategies that leaders can embrace to turn the tide on this rising crisis in our community.
