At the UCF Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, we boast an esteemed, diverse and world-renowned faculty who perform cutting-edge research with support from government agencies

and national laboratories. They’ve built strong relationships with industry partners that have led to insightful and enriching learning opportunities, including fellowships, internships and research programs, for students at UCF and beyond. Through our highly ranked programs in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and biomedical engineering, our faculty ensure that students receive a quality education that instills habits of life-long learning and professional development. We teach our students that the sky is not the limit, and our alumni have gone on to launch very successful careers in the areas of space exploration, additive manufacturing, wearable devices, AI, technology and more. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is housed within the College of Engineering and Computer Science, one of 13 colleges at UCF. The department is home to the Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research, which aims to conduct impactful research in the areas of aviation and power generation. Our faculty also collaborate with other UCF researchers through the Biionix, Renewable Energy and Chemical Transformation, and the Disability, Aging and Technology faculty clusters. We’re also located in sunny Orlando, Florida, near the top theme parks in the world, a major international airport, beautiful beaches and cultural venues such as the Orlando Museum of Art and the Dr. Philips Center for the Performing Arts. Innovating the future of air travel ✨

Trustee Chair Subith Vasu and postdoctoral scholar Justin Urso '15 '22PhD secured a NASA grant to further advanced air mobility, an emerging area of transportation.

In the future, people won’t hail traditional taxicabs to the airport — they’ll hop in air taxis that can fly them from remote locations to major airports in a matter of minutes.

The Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research (CATER), led by Director and Pegasus Professor Jay Kapat, was officially named an official university center last month, a significant milestone in its 20-year history of pursuing groundbreaking projects in power generation, space propulsion and aviation.

Today is National Aviation Day, held each year on Aug. 19, Orville Wright's birthday! We're kicking off a weeklong celebration to share UCF's research and contributions to aviation.

We've come a long way from the Wright brothers' first flight! Led by Trustee Chair and Professor Kareem Ahmed, researchers at UCF's HyperSpace Center of Excellence are working on taking air travel to hypersonic speeds of Mach 6 to 17 — that's 4,600 to 13,000 mph! At these speeds, you can travel from New York to London in less than 15 minutes. 🤯

✨ Commencement spotlight ✨

When mechanical engineering master’s student Brandon Castellano crosses the commencement stage, it will be an incredible triumph of not only earning an advanced degree, but also of thriving after giving up everything he loved to reach his goals.

Castellano moved from New York to Florida in January 2025 to start his master’s degree program, leaving behind the only home he’d ever known. He says he chose to pursue his master’s degree at UCF for its distinguished reputation in mechanical engineering, adding that Orlando is in the epicenter of defense and aerospace contractors in the U.S.

As a graduate researcher for Associate Professor Like Li's Thermal Energy Storage and Decarbonization (TESD) Lab, he worked on its thermochemical energy storage system, a $3.8 million project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Technologies Office, with the task of designing, building and testing a thermochemical energy storage reactor using manganese magnesium oxide as solar fuel.

UCF engineering students are using their skills and expertise to assist those who have been injured in the Venezuela earthquakes through their humanitarian initiative, Bracing Venezuela.

The Biomedical Engineering Society, with support from the American Association of Venezuelan Engineers, is 3D printing orthopedic devices such as splints, neck bracers and pet immobilizers for humans and animals who were hurt in the disaster.

Professor Tuhin Das and members of his lab have developed CRAFTS, a new plug-and-play software that simplifies engineering design. ✨

The project was supported by a $3.3 million grant from the Advanced Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).
