Veterinary Medicine and community health are intertwined in more ways than meets the eye. One Health initiatives address hot-topic issues, such as the New World Screwworm, and are essential for educating our communities and supporting our veterinary professionals.

We're committed to the local veterinary community and to pet owner education, and we want to make our resources easy to access for everyone.

In partnership with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension and University of Arizona College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences, faculty members Jennifer Wishnie and Christina Brownlee, DVM, and One Health Resident Mandy Sorenson developed essential resources to help pet owners, veterinarians, and shelter staff and volunteers easily identify screwworm.

Yesterday we celebrated 113 students completing their three-year journey to becoming veterinarians. Three years of hard work, commitment and sacrifice. And they did it!

Thank you to all the family, friends and community members who joined us for the celebration.

Congratulations to our Class of 2026! We’re so extraordinarily proud of you and we can’t wait to see how you impact our profession and the communities around you as you start your careers.

🎓 Road to Graduation: Jennifer De Long 🎓

Our final graduate feature for our series is Jennifer De Long. For Jennifer, graduation is more than a personal milestone. As a first-generation college student, Jennifer is forging a new path in her family, and she carries her achievement with a deep sense of gratitude for the people who helped her get here.

"This achievement is not only a personal milestone," she says, "but a reflection of the unwavering support from those who believed in me."

After graduation, Jennifer plans to stay in Arizona and work at a small-animal practice, bringing her skills back to the community that raised her. "I'm excited to give back to the community that I was born and raised in, and to do what I love," she says.

Zoe's next adventure takes her to Virginia, where she'll join United Therapeutics-Revivicor as an associate research veterinarian, working on innovative xenotransplantation studies using genetically modified pigs.

Her tips for first-years: "Be curious and adventurous—try new things and explore all that school has to offer. Who knows, you might find a passion you didn't know you had!"

🎓 : Meet Carmaletha Bitsoi! 🎓

Introducing another inspiring feature in our Road to Graduation series: meet Carmaletha, a first-generation college graduate in the Arizona CVM Class of 2026.

Carmaletha's path included 10+ years as a veterinary technician, raising a family, and returning to school to finish what she started, all while drawing on her family's encouragement. Her journey to veterinary medicine serves as a reminder not to give up on one's dreams, as reflected in her advice to future applicants:

"Do not give up on the dreams and goals you have set for yourself. Many meaningful accomplishments require sacrifice, and only you can decide what you are willing to do to reach your goals."

After graduation, she'll join Hippo Veterinary Group's Fifth-Year Mentorship Program in the Phoenix Valley, with long-term plans to serve rural and underserved communities through the USDA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program.

🎓 Road to Graduation: Makenna Snodgrass 🎓

Makenna came into vet school set on emergency and critical care, but her clinical year changed everything. "I saw how many urgent cases are brought into GP practices, providing a break from the typical appointments that general practitioners see."

Now she's headed to Lovet White Tanks to begin her career in general practice, right here in the state she calls home. "I was born and raised in Arizona, so I wanted to stay and give back to the community I was raised in."

Before she starts, she's celebrating with a week in California with her boyfriend and two cats!
