Founded in 1974, the Maine Peace Action Committee is an organization of students, faculty and community members dedicated to resisting injustice and promoting values of peace and nonviolence. Traditionally, we have had a focus on resisting militarism, or the efforts to use nuclear weapons and other military means to solve human problems, and imperialism, or the efforts by powerful nations to use e
conomic and military means to impose their will on less powerful peoples. More recently, we have had a specific focus on economic injustice and inequality, specifically student debt, resistance to our increasingly corporate-dominated society and to the allocation of resources towards the military and the wealthiest individuals and corporations. Through various forms of education and a variety of creative actions, we call attention to and resist these forces of injustice, and seek to create and promote alternative ways of living that are more reflective of the values of peace, love, compassion, and nonviolence.
