Welcome back everyone! This past Sunday we had our first birding adventure of the semester at Schoodic, Acadia National Park. We had a fantastic turnout of 11 people, plus we ran into some birders while we were out! Of the 30ish species that we found, some of special note included Harlequin Duck, Razorbill, and a unusual Bonaparte's Gull. Check out some of the photos below taken by club member Kelby Leary! Great shots!

Members of the Marsh Island Birding Club ventured out after a rare Great Gray Owl that was seen only minutes away at Sunkhaze National Wildlife Refuge. This is the largest owl in North America by size but not weight. This owl is typically found in the boreal forests of Canada. Today is a great day for The Marsh Island Birding Club! Today the club was granted preliminary recognition by the University of Maine's Student Senate and is now considered a UMaine student organization. As of now, the club will be known as "The Marsh Island Birding Club at The University of Maine". It may be a long name, but nothing makes us happier here than to be a part of our University community. Stay tuned for our first official meeting times and field trips and Happy Birding!

After hearing about a report of a Swainson's Hawk on Friday, members of the Marsh Island Birding Club went to Millinocket, ME to find it over the weekend. The Swainson's Hawk is normally found in the western United States, so it is really rare here in Maine! To read more about this species and to see its range map, go to: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Swainsons_Hawk/id
