Military training has been a part of the University of Maine for more than 150 years. The commissioning of Army Officers from this program is a time honored tradition that continues today as each spring, we commission new Second Lieuten

ants into the United States Army. The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Maine is a voluntary program designed to enhance a student’s education by providing unique and challenging leadership and management experience. This program helps students develop self esteem, self-discipline, physical stamina, teamwork, management skills, and other qualities essential to success in any workplace. The Black Bear Battalion currently has over 8o cadets enrolled in the program and is the only Army ROTC program in the state of Maine. These cadets come from various degree programs including engineering, nursing, criminal justice, political science, and many other academic programs. The battalion staff possess decades of valuable experience that they draw from to teach these cadets what it means to be a leader in today’s modern Army. The program involves both classroom and applied learning. Through “hands on” instruction, students learn and practice related skills. Through activities like orienteering, paintball, rappelling, rifle marksmanship, and field training exercises, the program stresses teamwork and the application of leadership principles to overcome situational problems and obstacles. As students progress through the program, senior cadets are given the opportunity to lead and teach underclassmen. The Black Bear Battalion has a long history full of tradition and pride that is instilled in each cadet that joins our corps of cadets. Congratulations to Jesse Bouchard on officially contracting and swearing in. As a current MS1, Jesse has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic and a high level of involvement in everything ROTC has to offer. Whether it’s training, labs or stepping up when it matters, he has proven himself to be dependable and motivated. His dedication and willingness to put in the extra effort have set him apart and this milestone is a direct reflection of that commitment. Heading into MS2 next year, there’s no doubt he’ll continue to grow and lead. He’s a History major and SigEp brother as well! Congrats CDT Bouchard!!!

Back from CFTX in Mass. We spent the weekend running full mission sets to prepare MSIIIs for Advanced Camp. Planned and executed patrols, ran lanes as leadership and evaluators and rotated through roles under real time pressure. Conducted day land nav, practiced briefing OPORDs, movement to contact and small-unit tactics while getting constant feedback.

Two squads conducting ambush operations during lab emphasizing disciplined movement and control while crossing LDAs to gain position on the objective. Our Umaine & Husson Cadets were focusing on maintaining security, spacing and noise/light discipline as they moved through danger areas, then synchronized fires and maneuver to achieve surprise. The lanes that were conducted reinforced the importance of situational awareness, communication and rapid actions on the objective before a controlled withdrawal.

We’d like to recognize our alumni spotlight 2LT Colton Lydon Shay! 2LT Shay graduated from the University of Maine Black Bear Battalion Army ROTC program with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in May of 2025.
He served as Captain of the Color Guard, Vice President of the 20th Maine Honor Society, a member of the Ranger Challenge Team, and acted as the Battalion S1 during his MSIV year. Following his MSII year, he graduated from the Air Assault School at the Warrior Training Center, Fort Benning, Georgia. The following summer, he continued his professional development through the Nurse Summer Training Program at Madigan Army Medical Center, JBLM, Washington.

Beyond ROTC and nursing, 2LT Shay stayed active in campus life through various intramural sports and embracing Maine’s outdoors with ice fishing, skiing, whitewater rafting, and hiking as member of the Maine Outing Club

He is currently stationed at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii, serving as a 66H Medical-Surgical Nurse. There, he provides inpatient care to Soldiers, retirees and family members while continuing to develop as both a clinician and an Army officer. Serving at one of the Army’s premier medical centers in the Indo-Pacific has allowed him to combine the leadership foundation built at UMaine with the responsibility of caring for those who serve.

Reflecting on his time in Orono, 2LT Shay shared, “I was blessed to be surrounded by mentors and peers at UMaine who consistently challenged me to grow. The Black Bear Battalion helped shape my work ethic and gave me the foundation I rely on now as a young officer and Army Nurse.”

The Black Bear Battalion takes pride in commissioning leaders like 2LT Shay, whose service in the Army Nurse Corps reflects the strength of the program and its enduring commitment to developing disciplined, adaptable, and compassionate officers prepared to lead wherever the Army calls. We are so proud of Lieutenant Shay!

This past weeks lab focused on the squad attack, walking through each step of a squad attack from initial movement to actions on the objective. After detailed instruction, cadets broke into small groups and used terrain model kits to visualize the battlefield, analyze avenues of approach, and brief their own squad attack plans. Hands-on training like this builds tactical understanding, confidence and leadership at the small-unit level!
