The Upward Bound program serves around 120 freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors attending high school in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, and Waldo counties, as well as the Greater Portland Area and Oxford Hills. Our students qualify economically, will usually be the first in the family to go to college, and are interested in pursuing higher education. This unique educational experience consi

sts of daily tutorials focusing on the areas of math, science, English composition, foreign language, and literature. In an enriched learning environment, students work on group and individual projects with teaching advisors. Courses are also offered in career development and the college selection process. Afternoon activities include either career related job-shadowing, individual project research or community service. Along with cultural and recreational activities, tutoring and personal counseling are also available.

This week we want to highlight Chloe Murdock who is a graduate of Dexter Regional High School. Chloe has decided to attend Columbia University is New York City. She intends to eventually attend medical school to become a doctor and somewhere along the way join a volunteer program. Chloe leaves us with powerful words from Van Gogh “ I would rather die of passion than of boredom”.

Next we have Cadence Savage who is now a recent graduate of Penobscot Valley High School. Cadence has decided to attend the University of Maine, where she will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English. Although Cadence will still be involved in areas of Upward Bound in college, the words that’s she leaves us with for now are “ Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do” Morris Schwartz.

This week we are highlighting the lovely Vanessa Morrow who is a graduate of Stearns High School. Vanessa will be attending the University of Maine this fall for Studio Art. The career path she plans to pursue is that of a tattoo artist.

The next senior we want to highlight is Khloey Clark from Nokomis Regional High School. Khloey will be attending Eastern Maine Community College for Elementary Education. Ultimately, Khloey’s goal is “To be the first person in her family to finish college”.

As students start graduation proceedings this weekend we wanted to begin highlighting some of the graduating seniors in the Upward Bound Class of 2026!

Our first student is Alizay Cox who will be attending The University of Maine for Psychology. Alizay leaves us with the wise words of Mary Oliver “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable”.

We are officially 2 months out from the start of the summer program! Here’s some memories from a few workshops last summer where we fished, played games, and made our own terrariums. We can’t wait to laugh altogether again!
