Maine Policy Scholars Program!

Are you interested in receiving a $5,000 scholarship to study a real-life policy issue currently facing Maine? The Maine Policy Scholars program is now accepting applications from undergraduate students wishing to conduct original, independent research during the 2026-2027 academic year.

One undergraduate student from the University of Maine (Orono) will be selected to represent our campus in the Maine Policy Scholars program during the 2026-2027 academic year. The student, together with the six other University of Maine system students in the program, will learn how to conduct original, independent research; participate in colloquia; and present their research ideas and findings to local policymakers. The student will work on their research under the guidance of a faculty advisor from their campus and a local community mentor.

The Maine Policy Scholars program is open to students in any major who have completed at least two years of college as of August 2026. The program runs from September 2026 to April 2027. Funding is provided through the Maine Community Foundation. Students receive a scholarship of $5,000, as well as $1,000 for research expenses.

Previous students have studied issues related to forestry regulation, addiction prevention, child welfare, wind power, energy efficiency, school nutrition, proficiency-based learning, civic education, habitat conservation, the nursing shortage, homelessness, and the use of AI on our campus. For more information about the program, please visit this webpage: https://umaine.edu/socialwork/maine-policy-scholars-program/.

To apply, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdGjOa7-iFWuM-mrJx_6qcOH1N5C5lg7SKcIHBR5WnClXGrnw/viewform. Applications from undergraduate students in any discipline are welcome and encouraged. Applications are due March 30th at 12pm.
