For Andre Khalil, professor of biomedical engineering and founder of the CompuMAINE Lab, and his wife, Lyne, UMaine has proven to be the right fit for their family time and again.

Their son Hubert, a senior mechanical engineering major, and Theo, a sophomore civil and environmental engineering major with a minor in mechanical engineering, are both studying within the Maine College of Engineering and Computing. Their youngest, Felix, who is currently in high school, is already interested in pursuing electrical engineering at UMaine as well.

What stood out most to the family was the combination of academic strength and campus environment. UMaine offers internationally recognized programs, strong job placement outcomes, and a campus surrounded by nature, all while being close to home.

Their decision has already opened doors. Through Innovate for Maine, Hubert was matched with an exciting Maine-based tech startup, ReForm Composites, Inc., that took him to conferences in Orlando and Paris.

ā€œHaving worked at UMaine for over 20 years, we see two and likely all three of our sons attending UMaine as proof of our trust in UMaine’s quality teaching and way of life,ā€ Andre said.

Know a future Black Bear in your family? With the May 1 confirmation deadline approaching, now is the time to commit to UMaine. Visit umaine.edu/admissions/deposit to learn about next steps.

For this Black Bear family, the university has been part of their story for more than two decades.

Stefano and Sandra Tijerina moved to Maine in 2002 as Stefano pursued his master’s in Public Administration. Both continued their studies at UMaine and ultimately decided to stay in the state.

While his parents built careers in the Maine Business School and the UMaine Honors College, their son Santi spent much of his childhood around campus.

ā€œBy the time Santi entered high school, it was clear that UMaine was the right choice,ā€ Stefano said. ā€œHe was raised a ā€˜Black Bear,’ recognizing the value of a UMaine education and experience, a unique one indeed.ā€

Santi went on to graduate from the Honors College in 2023 with a degree in International Affairs and a minor in French. His time at UMaine included studying abroad as a Killam Fellow, winning his category at the CUGR Student Symposium, and graduating summa cm laude with highest honors. He also served as a Team Mainer and Honors Ambassador.

ā€œUMaine provided our son with the academic rigor and leadership opportunities necessary to grow into a confident professional,ā€ Sandra said. ā€œWe couldn’t be prouder to be a Black Bear family.ā€

Are you a Black Bear family? Do you know a new Black Bear headed to UMaine this fall? Encourage them to take the next step by submitting their enrollment deposit by May 1 to secure their spot.

For some UMaine students, the first year on the coast makes all the difference.

Through the Coastal Year program, first-year students in select science majors start at the University of Maine at Machias, enjoying smaller classes, hands-on learning and life by the Downeast coast.

Some, like Autumn Gallant, use it as a bridge to Orono.

ā€œStarting in a smaller, close-knit community made the transition much easier and more enjoyable,ā€ said Autumn, a resident of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Others, like Jose Pacheco, chose to stay in Machias.

ā€œIn the short time I’ve been here I have already become part of several communities and made great connections with peers and staff,ā€ Jose said. ā€œIt just felt right to stick around.ā€

From collecting samples along nearby beaches to working with local hatcheries, students dive into real-world learning from day one. The program helps build confidence and independence — all while exploring Maine’s coast.

The University of Maine has approved a new minor in actuarial studies within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, preparing students for careers analyzing financial risk through math and statistics.

Coursework combines math, economics, accounting and finance to help students prepare for professional actuarial exams.

Employment for actuaries is projected to grow 22% over the next decade. A partnership with Unum will connect students with mentors and reimburse qualifying students for one attempt at the profession’s first certification exam.
