Hi Everyone!

These are exciting times for "modelers" in science education!

Our work together these past six years in the Next Generation Modeling Courses for Teachers (NGMC) program has been an adventure. Through NGMC, we achieved over 240 course completions and reached teachers in over eight countries! NGMC has now evolved into a new organization called Modeling Teachers International (MTI), the international affiliate of the American Modeling Teachers Association. MTI aims to to promote the Modeling Method of Instruction (Model Didactics) around the globe. Please check us out at:

WhatsAp group: Please send your WA/phone number to: [email protected]

Beginning today, we will move news and announcements of our current efforts to the MTI website and associated socials.

Thanks for being such devoted followers these past six years, and see you there! (On the MTI page, please click "Join" and answer the questions for this private group.)

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is hosting a FREE 1-day professional development workshop, Friday, May 3 (9 am - 4 pm) for teachers (grades 9-12). Two parallel sessions are offered: Modeling ("Modeling with Mark") and Pivot Interactives. The Modeling session will be led by physicist, Dr. Mark Lattery who is the Modeling Teachers International President and an AMTA Executive Board Member. Mark's session will cover modeling theory and practical tips for implementing model-based inquiry in the classroom. Abstract: This workshop explores the role of scientific models and modeling in science instruction using examples from physics (grades 9-12). Topics include modeling theory, the Hestenes modeling method of instruction, and the Hesse theory of analogies. Examples are drawn from geometric optics, the simple pendulum, and other phenomena. The Pivot session will be led by Dr. Matt Vonk, cofounder of Pivot Interactives, and will include examples and suggestions for getting the most out of Pivot whether you're a new or advanced user. Lunch will be provided. Anyone interested should please fill out the form HERE. We look forward to seeing you soon!

In February, I visited beautiful Netherlands with my wife, Stephanie, to give a two-day professional development physics-teacher workshop entitled, "Model Didactics: Models, Analogies, and the Modeling Method of Instruction". The participants (27 teachers and educational leaders) were amazing! Special thanks for our hosts, Onne Slooten, Liliane Bouma (and her husband Tjibbe), Said El-Haidouri, Betapartners, and Comenius College, for their outstanding hospitality! I am also happy to announce that this event was sponsored by our new organization, Modeling Teachers International (https://modelingteachersinternational.org/).

Modern Physics for Teachers is one of six (6) graduate-level courses in the Next Generation Modeling Courses for Teachers (NGMCs) suite, all which be used to obtain an online Masters degree in Education (physics track) through UW Oshkosh. Now in our sixth year, NGMCs have reached over 160 physics teachers in 9 different countries.

• Are you teaching outside the continental US? It's no problem! We have significant experience working with teachers all over the globe.

• Are you overwhelmed as a teacher, super busy at home, and hesitant to enroll in a university course during the school year? We have more than two decades working with teachers and can work with you!

Spreadsheet Physics: Monkey in the Tree

Spreadsheet physics is an amazing way to help introductory physics students learn physics while also teaching important life skills! The attached video below shows an Excel simulation that students (grades 9-12) can create for the "monkey in the tree" problem. My students love this activity! To access the Excel file for this activity for free, click here: https://uwosh.edu/physics/outreach/ngmc/extras/

Want to learn how to incorporate spreadsheet physics into your classroom? Join us this summer for Scientific Modeling and Computation for Teachers (June 12 to July 7)!
