Mark Curnutte was recently recognized as a Bridge Builder during the 60th anniversary celebration of the Cincinnati--Hamilton County Community Action Agency (CAA) on September 21, 2024 for his extensive reporting on human beings in marginalized communities at The Cincinnati Enquirer and teaching social justice at Miami University.

CAA is one of the initial partners in the five-year-old (and counting) Social Justice Internship Program at Miami. Each year the agency has hosted two students for an immersive three-week learning and development opportunity during Miami's January term.

Cincinnati-Hamilton County CAA was the second agency of its kind in the country. The Community Action program, designed by former Cincinnati Mayor Theodore Berry Sr. grew out of President Lyndon Johnson's 1964 War on Poverty, along with Legal Aid and Head Start. These federal human uplift programs have endured as vital parts of the federal social safety net - data proven to have elevated tens of millions of Americans out of poverty, helping them to achieve self-sufficiency, all while treating them with respect and allowing them to maintain their dignity.
