We have finished our excavations for the year! At the end of the fall semester, students cleaned, sorted, and analyzed the artifacts that they collected during Dr. Krista Eschbach’s public archaeology class.

We had rain and freezing cold weather at the very end of October. Given that we are only in the field a few hours a week, this really slowed down work at the site. This week, we had more sunshine and warmer (though still cold) weather, allowing our work to pick back up.

If you came to visit the site on Public Archaeology Day, you learned that this structure was built during the Sheegog occupation and likely housed enslaved individuals. We are excavating a test unit inside the structure to better understand the architecture and the lives of the enslaved people who lived there.
