We're very excited to have two of our recently graduated students, Katie Johnston and Katie Sevin, present a class project at the State Department in Washington DC today. The project was part of an international competition where our students, in a semester-long class led by Bryan McCloskey (FBI), designed a website to encourage better understanding of Islam in an effort to counter radicalism. The website, openmiss.org, was built in association with the UM Muslim Student Association. Congratulations to our students for the deserved recognition and for their hard work.

Clandestine Operations in themselves are enigmas, mysteries that are hard to speculate on and even harder to scrutinize post- operation. [ 1977 more words. ]

One of our classes this semester contains a case study of the Hae Min Lee murder case described in SERIAL. SERIAL, a spin-off podcast from This American Life, has everything you could want in a complicated case: timelines, locations, conflicting viewpoints, throngs of characters, and mountains of facts that may or may not, together, contain the truth of what happened in Baltimore, 1999.

Unless you’ve been living under a metaphorical rock lately you’ve probably heard that NBC’s Nightly News anchor, Brian Williams, has been accused of embellishing personal accounts of news stories he has covered over the years. In particular, Williams’ retelling of an attack on a military helicopter he was traveling in, while reporting on the Iraq war in 2003, has been called into question by the crew of the 159th Aviation Regiment Chinook that was actually downed by rocket fire.
