Miami University Electrical & Computer Engineering Department

Miami University Electrical & Computer Engineering Department Engineering What is Electrical Engineering? They design products or systems for optimum function and performance. What is Computer Engineering?

Electrical engineering encompasses analysis, design, synthesis, and maintenance of products, services, and systems that touch nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Electrical engineers need to understand and apply mathematics, science, and engineering science to research concepts and modeling methods. They implement the design using efficient and cost-effective means. They simulate and test work

ing conditions and their impact on systems. And they synthesize elements in order to obtain the optimum design of a specific product. Computer engineering is an exciting discipline that blends topics from computer science (such as software development) and electrical engineering (such as digital hardware) to create digital systems that benefit society. Computer engineers design and develop products that range from home appliances and computers to industrial robots, from cars to airplanes. The processes range from simple algorithm development to processing of images containing massive amounts of information. What is Engineering Management? Engineering management offers an interdisciplinary approach to address the complexities in today’s workplace. This program also provides a diverse academic background, including engineering, business, science, mathematics, and the liberal arts. The curriculum is designed to help you develop engineering and business expertise, social awareness, cultural perspective, and interpersonal communication.

Virginia Tech and the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) operate an international National Science Foundation (NSF) Research for Undergraduates (REU) site on the topic of Automotive and Autonomous Systems Engineering in Germany and the USA. The overall objective of the NSF REU program is to increase the number of US students that pursue graduate studies in engineering and science by engaging them through graduate research activities while they are undergraduates.

Summer 2022 will be the 10th summer of our US-German NSF REU program. Each NSF REU participant is paid $6,000 and their travel and living expenses are covered during this 10-week summer experience. We will also cover the cost of international health insurance for those going to Germany. German language skills are not required.

The faculty of mechanical engineering at the Technische Universität Darmstadt is top-ranked in Europe, with automotive engineering as one of their specialities. Their 30 faculty members perform more than $50 million in externally funded research per year, funding 430 doctoral candidates. This is truly a top-flight program for our students to work with.

As on February 22, 2022, students from the USA will no longer have to quarantine for 10 days upon entry into Germany, though they still will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter Germany. We are therefore excited to forge ahead with the Summer 2022 NSF REU program there. The application deadline has therefore been extended to March 7, 2022 (postmarked).

Redhawk Radio currently has a **PAID** open Chief Engineer position available beginning in Spring 2022. Preferably freshmen, sophomores, or juniors would be best suited for filling the position as they would be able to hold onto the position the longest. Experience/general knowledge regarding setting up and troubleshooting broadcasting/studio/sound equipment, software, computers, and servers is preferred but not required, as any new hire will have the ability to either meet with me and learn about the duties and responsibilities of the position in-person, or shadow me for the remainder of the Fall 2021 semester.

The position’s description is as follows:

The WMSR Redhawk Radio Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the studio and other equipment are functioning safely and properly. Should there be a problem with any equipment, the engineer must be able to respond to the problem and devise a solution. This solution may include finding replacement equipment, repairing current equipment, or implementing a temporary fix until a more permanent solution is found. The Chief Engineer is also responsible for maintaining the software that is necessary to continue operating online—even at times of high demand. Anything relating to the technical infrastructure that keeps WMSR Redhawk Radio operational falls under the chief engineer’s domain.

This position pays $8.55 per hour, for a maximum of $500 per academic year. You can work on your own schedule, however you will need to be available/on-call to help show hosts if an issue with equipment or simply user-error should arise. Lastly, some work can be done remotely, however most work will be done in William’s hall studio and podcast rooms 221 A and B. Room 221 C serves as an executive office space/lounge for the Chief Engineer and the other paid executive positions under WMSR Redhawk Radio.
