Sigma Chi Alpha Chapter at Miami University

Thanks to the hard work from our executive committee and the chapter as a whole, the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi was rewarded with the J. Dwight Peterson Significant Chapter Blue Award this summer.

The Peterson Award is "the highest honor that the fraternity bestows upon an undergraduate chapter". This is the 5th year in a row we have earned this distinction, and we hope that we can continue this dedication to excellence and achievement in the future.

This award is a testament to the leadership of Henry Walton & Tyler Totin who guided us this past year. The future is bright for the Alpha Chapter!

Transitioning into the new semester, the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi is proud to announce that for the fourth year in a row our chapter was awarded the J. Dwight Peterson Significant Chapter Award! The Peterson Award is “the highest honor that the Fraternity bestows upon an undergraduate chapter”, and we are extremely proud to have been honored with this distinction. We are also proud to have received an average GPA of 3.41 for the 2021 Spring Semester, which is the second highest among fraternities on campus, and we look forward to carrying that momentum into the Fall.

Our chapter had some great opportunities when the annual Sigma Chi Krach Transformational Leaders Workshop was held right here at home in Oxford, Ohio. Alpha had 5 exec officers attend the workshop and they were tasked with helping lead the special experiences that were put on for the 800+ brothers in attendance. We had hundreds of brothers from across the country and Canada tour the Alpha house and the original 1855 founding site. We were reminded of how fortunate we are to have this amazing facility to house or brothers and we can’t thank our alumni enough that continue to donate to help make the Alpha chapter even stronger!

Yesterday was Founder's Day as on that date Sigma Chi was founded at Miami University in 1855! Since then Sigma Chi has grown exponentially with more than 355,000 members, 249 chapters across North America and more than 125 alumni groups around the world. This day marks 166th anniversary of our fraternity's founding, and we thank those who have helped our chapter, and the organization as a whole, grow to what it is today! The future is bright.

The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi is excited to announce that we have officially reached our goal and raised over $50,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute! We would like to thank all the alumni, brothers, family members and friends who helped us reach this milestone for the first time in our chapter's history. We will be the generation to end cancer!

Brothers,

The brothers of Sigma Chi have a proud tradition of hosting a weeklong philanthropy event called Derby Days each Spring. This year, our Derby Days event will take place from April 5-April 9 and will consist of sororities competing in tournament style activities around campus. Our philanthropic efforts benefit the Huntsman Cancer Institute which is one of the top facilities for cancer research, treatment, and care. All donations raised during Derby Days will be given to their team of healthcare professionals in an effort to better cancer treatment.

In 2019, the brothers of the Alpha Chapter raised a record number of donations raised at $29,000. This year, the Alpha Chapter has set an ambitious goal to raise $50,000. This figure is far from arbitrary - an independent clinical research trial at the Huntsman Cancer Institute costs $50,000. This year, the Alpha Chapter has already worked incredibly hard to raise over $25,000.

We appreciate a donation of any amount. It takes a lot to reach this large goal, but we will be pushing ourselves to find a way to reach it. Brothers, I thank you so much for your consideration and wish you a great rest of the year.

Congratulations to our current chapter advisor Michael Bertz '91 for his initiation into the Order of Constantine, and I know we have appreciated his guidance during this interesting year. The Order of Constantine is the peak honor given to Sigma Chi's for their time and effort in helping the growth of our fraternity. Two other Alpha Chapter alumni: Dr. Brent Matthews '89, and Stotle Mastorides '89 were named Significant Sigs for their devotion to our chapter and fraternity since their graduation from Miami University. As always we extremely appreciate the enduring support of our alumni for they are the reason that our chapter remains strong and will always be strong on campus and internationally!
