🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Celina Benavides on being named our newest Condor of the Month!

As a Psychology professor, Dr. Benavides goes above and beyond to support her students and colleagues. Her passion for teaching and advancing social causes in the service of our community sets a powerful example here on campus.

Recently, Dr. Benavides served as one of our keynote speakers during the Ventura County Office of Education’s Servingness: Community to College conference held here at Oxnard College. The event focused on advancing familismo and student dignity starting in preschool and on through college. Through publications with Harvard University and UnidosUS, among others, Dr. Benavides also contributes her voice to national conversations on diversity and equity in education.

🎙️ Dr. Benavides is equally passionate about translating research into practical tools that parents can use to support their children’s emotional and cognitive development. Her work was even recently featured on NPR’s Life Kit podcast.

💚 Congratulations, Dr. Benavides. Your dedication to students, learning, and equity truly embodies the Condor spirit!

🙌This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the power of young women driving change in their communities.

📚In 2019, two Oxnard students, Kimberli Oregel and Desiree Luis, set out to learn more about the person their middle school was named after, Richard B. Haydock. After reading the book “Strategies of Segregation: Race, Residence, and the Struggle for Educational Equality” by historian David G. García, they learned how Haydock had supported racist policies that segregated and disadvantaged Mexican American students in Oxnard’s schools.

🗣️Rather than keep the information to themselves, Kimberli and Desiree spoke up. With support from their teacher, they presented their findings to the Oxnard School District Board of Trustees and advocated for a new school name that better reflected the values of their community.

Their courage and persistence made a a real impact. In 2020, the Oxnard School District officially renamed the campus Dr. Manuel M. López Academy of Arts & Sciences.

👏This local story is a powerful reminder that leadership has no age requirement and that young women’s voices help drive change in our community! 👏

🙌 Student parents work hard to build a better future for themselves and their families. One of the many resources supporting that journey is the CalWORKs program here at Oxnard College, which provides students with tools and services to help them succeed in college while balancing family responsibilities.

Through CalWORKs, students can receive:
• Academic counseling and career guidance to support their educational and career goals • Financial and academic support, including work study opportunities, and priority registration • Family-focused resources, such as childcare assistance, school supplies, and connections to campus, community services and more

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Programs like CalWORKs empower student parents to complete their education, enter the workforce, and create new opportunities for their families.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who helped make our Annual 805 Industry Day a success!

🤝 In partnership with the Ventura County Office of Education, we welcomed nearly 80 high school counselors from across the county for a day focused on career education and workforce pathways. This annual event connects our K–12 partners with Oxnard College’s career technical education programs, ensuring counselors are equipped to guide students toward meaningful career opportunities that meet regional workforce needs.

🛠️Together, we are strengthening pathways and preparing the next generation of Ventura County’s skilled workforce.

🎉 A special thank you to our partners at the Ventura County Office of Education for their continued collaboration!

🎓 Last week, Oxnard College welcomed civil rights icon Dolores Huerta for the 40th National TRIO Day.

In partnership with California Lutheran University, which generously sponsored the event, middle and high school students from across the region visited our campus to celebrate the impact of TRIO programs in our community.

Students also heard from notable TRIO alumni, including a discussion with Ventura County Supervisor Vianey Lopez and Oxnard City Councilwoman Gabriela Rodríguez, who focused on their own TRIO and leadership journeys. Other local leaders joined and spoke at the celebration as well, including remarks from Gabriela Torres, Chair of the Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees. Students were especially excited to hear from labor leader and activist, Dolores Huerta, whose life’s work has uplifted communities like ours throughout the nation.
