Come meet Lonnie Peck at his exhibition, "Evolution", opening this Thursday 5-6:30, March 12.
Lonnie Peck began his creative journey through music playing trombone. After performing through college in the 90s and later transitioning to vocal music as a hobby, he discovered knitting in the early 2000s as a meditative practice to help calm his nerves before performances.
By 2011, this interest in fiber art evolved into a deep passion for quilting. Following a move to Paducah, KY in 2020, Lonnie began working at the National Quilt Museum. Inspired by the quilts in the museum and wanting to create more artistic quilts of his own.
Currently pursuing an Associate in Fine Arts at the Paducah School of Art and Design, Lonnie is set to graduate in May 2026. He has been accepted to and will continue his studies at Murray State University in the fall of 2026 focusing on a BFA in Studio Art. He plans to incorporate a variety of artistic mediums including drawing, photography, and painting into his quilting but has also piqued a new interest in ceramics as well.
Lonnie says, "This exhibit represents a pivotal two-year period of growth and transition. Moving beyond the comfort of quilting, my time at the Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) has challenged me while opening new forms of artistic expression. I have approached my studio classes as a “sponge”, absorbing as much as possible from my instructors and fellow classmates. While working with charcoal, ink, clay, and wood are all new materials to me, I discovered that I deeply appreciate texture and tend to bring both tactile richness and a bit of whimsy to my designs.
Even as I venture into these diverse mediums, my “quilt-maker’s eye” remains as I search for how individual elements come together to form a cohesive big picture. The two quilts included in the show serve as anchor points, showcasing the geometric foundation I possessed prior to my art classes as I move toward a more curvilinear approach to how I view the world. This collection serves as a visual bridge between my love of fiber and my future in multi-disciplinary art."
