You apply to a job, don't hear back, and figure something about your resume or experience didn't land, then move on to the next application without knowing that the score from a screening test you took for one company might already be sitting in another company's system before you've even hit submit.

That's actually happening. A widely used hiring assessment called Pymetrics, which a large share of Fortune 500 companies plug into their process, stores your score and reuses it for up to a year, so if two different employers you apply to both use it, you're not getting two fresh chances, you're being judged on the same result twice without either company ever telling you that's what occurred, something researchers are now calling an algorithmic blackball.

Once you know that's how the system works, the smartest move stops being hoping for a different outcome and starts being making sure the version of you that gets seen first is the strongest one possible, which is exactly what my Microsoft Copilot class walks you through, using it to sharpen resume language in Word, stay on top of follow ups in Outlook, and move through applications with more precision instead of crossing your fingers, which is what actually moves the needle on getting an interview.

The class counts toward the Applied AI Productivity Badge, and a scholarship through Harper's Strengthening Workforce Skills program is open while funding lasts.

The instructor for CNC Essentials for Modern Manufacturing isn't just someone who knows the material. She's someone who has built her life around making sure others get access to it.

Kidia Burns is the Executive Director of Professional Women in Trades Inc. and CEO of KB Consulting Services, with years of experience teaching CNC machining to adults, all-women cohorts, and Technology Education to high school students. She doesn't just teach the skills. She engineers the pipeline.

This summer, she's bringing that expertise to Harper College's newest course offering, and if you've been looking for your entry point into advanced manufacturing, there is no better person to learn from.
