11/1 GCSC Update:
“Dear Scholars:
We hope that you are seeing life starting to settle into a new normal. We know that many of you have relocated and that many of you who are still in the area do not have reliable Internet access. Please rest assured that Gulf Coast State College is committed to working with your individual challenges to provide a path for you to complete the fall semester.
Many of you have contacted the college using our student hot line phone number to ask questions. Due to the high volume of phone calls, we appreciate your patience with us returning your phone calls in a timely manner.
We strongly encourage you to contact your professors next week (November 5 – 9) to workout an individual plan to complete your fall term academics. Faculty have been instructed to be creative, flexible and accommodating with all students to complete the semester. These accommodations include but are not limited to: creating online content to complete a face to face class utilizing online opportunities to replace classroom meetings; amended attendance requirements; extended semester completion deadlines; modified testing/proctoring options at no cost to the student; and extended campus library hours.
With these and more options, please know that our goal is the same as yours: Successful completion of the fall semester. Faculty will work with you to achieve this goal, so please communicate with your professors to work out a plan.
We understand that some of our students have basically lost everything, including textbooks. We are currently working with textbook publishers to secure textbooks to replace those lost in the storm. Again, please communicate this need with your professor. Also, we are currently collecting donations of cleaning supplies and personal items for students to access. That effort is being coordinated by Student Government and we will communicate with you how to access these items.
Many colleges across the state and country have contacted us with a desire to donate emergency funds for student access. We are working with the GCSC Foundation to complete the process for you to request assistance. This opportunity will be communicated to you via student email in the near future.
For students who are returning to campus on Monday, November 5, 2018 - Please understand that campus is a construction site. We have many buildings that are undergoing tremendous repair and many portions of buildings are not accessible. Please, for you safety, do not attempt to access any areas of campus that are cordoned off. We also request that you wear closed-toed shoes – no sandals or flip-flops. Think athletic shoes, boots, etc., to keep you safe!
Please have your GCSC Photo ID with you at all times when on campus. Each day on campus we will provide a free hot meal in the cafeteria for students. You will “sign in” at one of the computer kiosks using your GCSC ID number. Hours are 11 am – 2 pm (or until the food runs out). If you need to have a new GCSC Photo ID made, stop by the Student Union East Information Desk to have a new one made.
We are continuing to work on other initiatives and need your input on your individual needs. We will have a staffed help table located in the Cafeteria in the Student Union East for students to request assistance.
We look forward to seeing you back on campus! WE ARE GULF COAST! “
