Second master’s or DBA—which option makes more sense for an international student in the U.S.? 🎓
If you’re still eligible for another master’s degree, it may offer a more affordable way to gain career-relevant skills while continuing your academic journey. A DBA can remain a strong long-term option if your H-1B or other plans don’t work out later.
But never select a university only for CPT or a longer I-20. Compare the accreditation, total cost, program duration, CPT requirements, and how well the degree aligns with your career goals.

Under the DHS final rule currently scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026, programs completed before the effective date will not count toward the new restriction on studying at the same or a lower educational level.
This means a master’s degree you completed earlier does not automatically prevent you from pursuing another master’s program—but your exact completion date and individual immigration history matter.

Day 1 CPT 2026 update: Is Day 1 CPT ending after the F-1 Duration of Status change?

Not for every student—but choosing a program simply to continue working in the U.S. could create serious immigration risks.

Under SEVP’s August 2026 guidance, CPT must be a required and integral part of an established academic curriculum. It cannot exist only as an optional elective or a way to provide employment authorization.

Before selecting a Day 1 CPT university, ask:

• Is practical training required for every student in the program?
• Is the position directly related to my major?
• How is CPT integrated into the curriculum?
• Does the employer have the required agreement with the university?
• What are the onsite and full-time study requirements?
• Could my CPT history affect visa stamping or a future immigration application?

Remember: a university’s promise is not an immigration guarantee. Choose a genuine academic program, speak with your DSO and consult a qualified immigration attorney about your individual situation.
