40 years ago, fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez was at ArtCenter for a three-day workshop. Bodybuilders, evening gowns, and a live tiger - it was an '80s music video come to life.

Happy Birthday Jules Bates! Today would have been Jules’ 70th birthday, and we're celebrating him by launching the “Jules Bates photographs” collection in our Virtual Archives! Bates (1955-1982) was a Los Angeles-based photographer and photo editor of L.A. Weekly, who co-founded Artrouble with Phyllis Cohen and David Allen. Together they created iconic album covers, such as DEVO’s Freedom of Choice album and New Wave fashion imagery. The collection contains his images of album cover artwork, fashion photography, the late '70s Los Angeles punk scene, celebrity portraits, and his ArtCenter student work.

All photography by Jules Bates.

In 1935, ArtCenter was looking for students with ambition and taste - we'd provide the training. Five years after the school opened, this recruitment brochure used straight talk about the school and the profession to woo students during the Great Depression. It worked - the school thrived and soon outgrew its original campus.

Yeehaw! Saddle up for a field trip to Corriganville Movie Ranch! From the 1940s through the '60s, ArtCenter classes went to Simi Valley to draw or shoot the western-themed town. The buildings were lost to fire in the '70s, but they still film movies in the hills.
