U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins visited Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine on Aug. 28 to announce the Rural Veterinary Shortage Action Plan, a nationwide initiative to address critical gaps in food animal and large animal care across rural America.

During her visit, Rollins observed an equine emergency surgery and emphasized the importance of veterinary care to food security and national security. The plan includes an additional $15 million for the USDA’s veterinary loan repayment program, streamlined applications, new economic research on veterinary shortages, incentives for federal service, and stronger recruitment from rural communities through partnerships with veterinary schools like MSU.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, MSU President Mark E. Keenum, and Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation President Mike McCormick all underscored the importance of veterinary access to the future of agriculture, moving rural communities forward and national security.

Rollins also announced two MSU College of Veterinary Medicine alumni—Dr. Rachel McCurdy (Class of 2020) and Dr. Kimberly Klunk (Class of 2021)—as recipients of the USDA Veterinary Services Grant Program, each receiving $125,000 to expand veterinary services in rural Mississippi.
