Central College Communication Studies Department The Communication Studies program provides students with a broad-based exposure to the academic discipline that focuses on human symbolic interaction.

In an effort to cultivate critical thinking, clear writing, articulate speaking and proficiency with technology, our students study communication within interpersonal, group, organizational, public and mediated contexts. Through a combination of theoretical grounding and practical experience, we prepare our majors for a range of careers, enable them to participate productively in a democratic cult

ure, and instill in them a desire for life-long learning. Course work is supplemented by practica, internships, co-curricular activities and supervised independent study. Courses offered include:

We’d like to welcome Mary Donato to our department! Mary has taught in numerous locations including West Virginia (also her hometown), Iowa, and North Carolina and this will be her tenth year teaching.

Outside of the classroom, Mary loves attending concerts or going anywhere that has live music. Stop by and ask about some of her favorite artists!

Recipients shall: “Use a very challenging curriculum which demands outstanding performance from all students resulting in personal and intellectual growth; emphasize the attainment of strong writing and speaking skills from students; emphasize an interdisciplinary curriculum which exposes students to new ideas and connections not normally found in the professor's major field.”

Senior, Mollie Abkes, hopes to find a career in the field of live entertainment or event coordination after graduation.

Most memorable experience: “My semester-long internship with the Pella Opera House, where I was put in charge of coordinating their grand Festival of Trees fundraiser. Through this process, I found a love for community-driven work and long-term projects.”

Advice for majors: Seek out real-life experiences! They can help you find what you like, and what you don’t like, and especially build a really strong resume!

Jill Podhajsky is graduating this spring with her degree in Comm Studies. She plans to work in the field of Human Resources, where she hopes to “care for employees and cultivate a positive company culture.”

Most memorable experience: Doing summer research with Madison Johnson and Dr. Linda Laine, since it was fun getting to see the research project from start to finish.

Advice for majors: “Take advantage of any opportunities you can get because experience is everything in Communications.”

Keeley Gardiner ‘10 graduated from Central with a degree in Communication Studies with minors in Psychology and Spanish. She has moved from Iowa to Chicago and now resides in Milwaukee working as a Web & Social Media Specialist at the Milwaukee County Transit System.

Keeley and her husband got married in 2018 and have a nine-month-old child, Flinn. “He's been keeping us pretty busy, but other than that I love to go to concerts, travel, and spend time with friends and family as much as possible.”

Central graduate Amy Spike ‘11 is the Marketing & Programming Director for the American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa). “I oversee and complete all tasks related to public relations, event planning, advertising, and promotions.”
